Scribal Guide

Below you will find a very useful Scribal Guide, for beginners and others, written by Mistress Genna an Froaigh.

Before you start to use it though, I would like to make some corrections to the guide, many of which have been pointed out to me by several heralds here in Drachenwald:

In Drachenwald it is not the tradition for the Schwarzdrachen Herald to sign the armigerous scrolls. These rewards are given by their Majesties. The heralds have another system through which they accept names and coats of arms.

What the guide says in regard to Peerage regalia is not quite correct in the following respects:

  • Badges for the Order of Knighthood and Master/Mistress of Arms: spurs are not a badge for these orders and the chain is tinctureless, not gold.
  • Badge for the Order of the Laurel: the badge is tinctureless, a laurel wreath.
  • There is a mention of an alternate badge for the Panache, but this can not be changed without written permission from Rachel von Baeker.

Otherwise, good luck with your scribing!
Lady Signe Sigurdsdotter

The complete guide, including all scroll texts can be downloaded as an MS Word document or an Adobe PDF file.  The scroll texts can be viewed on-line if you desire.

Historical Documents

The awards and grants during medieval or renaissance time were usually quite large, but could have different sizes, from today's A4 up to today's A2. They most often had seals attached to them, hanging from the scroll. They had long texts and few illustrations. Here are links to three pictures of historical scrolls with attached seals:

Here you can find wordings from historical scrolls and some suggestions on how they can be adjusted to be used in the SCA. I hope you will get some inspiration!"
