THE CHARTER OF THE RAPIER ACADEMY OF DRACHENWALD

The Rapier Academy of Drachenwald

Purpose: The Academy is designed to recognize, educate and train fencers of all skill levels and to promote fencing in the Kingdom of Drachenwald.

Goals: It is the Academy’s goals to provide a support group for members of the Academy, to honor worthy fencers, and to provide a forum for all fencers throughout the Kingdom.

Officers of the Academy:

Praeceptor: The Praeceptor is the head of the Rapier Academy. This person will represent the Academy before the Crown, and reviews and amends this charter as needed to insure it serves the fencing community best. This office shall be held for two years.

Academy Scribe: The Academy Scribe is responsible to maintain a list of all Academy members. This list will include: their name, rank, and date that they were elevated to their rank. This office shall be held for two years.

Membership: Membership to the Academy will be free. Donations are requested but not required. Donations should be in the form of braids to signify rank, not money.

Ranking within the Academy:

Free Scholar:

Requirements to become a Free Scholar:

  1. Must be authorized in at least 3 fencing styles.
  2. Wait for 6 months from their first authorization.
  3. Must own their own sword and mask.
  4. Attempt to dress in a period style in a list.
  5. Present themselves honorably on the list field.
  6. Finally they must ask to "Play the Prize". They must fight at least 3 scholars or higher, twice, in each of the weapon forms that they are authorized in. They do not have to win these bouts, but must show that they have good proficiency.

Provost:

Requirements to become a Provost:

  1. Must be authorized in all fencing styles, including marshal.
  2. Must serve a minimum of 1 year as a free scholar.
  3. Must own their own armor.
  4. Will dress in a period style in a list.
  5. Present themselves honorably and chivalrously both on and off the field.
  6. Must be involved in at least one other aspect of the SCA (i.e., service to the light community, service to the Kingdom, participation in Arts & Sciences).
  7. Must demonstrate the ability to teach the art of fence.
  8. They must be invited to "Play the Prize", where they must fight at least 3 Provosts or higher, twice in each weapons style, followed by an open 30 minute time when he/she must fight all challengers.

Dean:

Requirements to become a Dean:

  1. They must serve at least 1 year as a Provost.
  2. Must be recognized by the Crown as a Member of the Dragon’s Steel.
  3. They must invite all Deans to "Play for the Prize". All Deans who so wish will fight the challenger thrice in all weapons styles. After said fights, the challenger must brave all opponents in open combat, single or combined, for as long as he is willing, but not less than an hour.

 

Insignias for the ranks will be worn on either the left shoulder or upper arm:

Officers: Will not wear any special markings.
