7.12. AS XXXIV

(Report covers the last quarter of 1999)

 Season Greetings,

Two years are gone, maybe even too quickly. University event in Wales was
nice and the site, Caldicot castle great. Master Paul and Lady Valeria
prepared the wonderful feast. If I only would have know that the feast was
Byzantine I would have prepared myself into my Byzantine outfit (grin!).

This is my last report to you as the Kingdom A & S minister. Next reports
are due on 15th of February and the reports are to be send to THL Caitrin
O*Sullivan (Julie Sauer, 9 Whitewood Walk, RAF Lakeheath, Suffolk, IP27
9RR, England, Phone +44-(0)1638-533207, E-mail: Jean1Cait1@aol.com) who
will take over the Kingdom MoAS job at next winter coronation.

DRACHENWALD UNIVERISTY IN WALES CALDICOT CASTLE
(Please read THL Caitrin*s report form the event):
Another University is now behind us, and for the most part it ran very
smoothly. As anticipated there were last minute cancellations and
classroom changes, which caused a little confusion, but that was to be
exspected. Ly Rhieinwen volunteered to put the University booklet
together, which was very nice considering the class schedule, as well as
map was enclosed of the castle. The biggest complaint was that the classes
were too short, (being 50 minutes long each) and I agree, but since
classes couldn't start until 9:00am and we needed to be off the site at
5:00, there wasn't much time in which to organize class time. A total of
5 hours were allotted for classes on Saturday, (with 1 hour for lunch and
1 hour for court) and 2 hours on Sunday. More class time was available on
Sunday, but since most people had to leave early, it wouldn't have been
fair to the teachers to schedule classes that couldn't be attended. I
would suggest 60-70 minutes per class allotting 10-15 minutes to get to
the next class, as in this case, some of the halls were not close
together.

The classes that were taught were:

that the documents will be connected to the main A & S homepage of
Drachewald. Please, if you taught at University forward your handout or

terafan@greydragon.org) in electronic format (text or word document).

Sometimes also Drachenwalders send articles to Tournaments Illuminated.
Please look at a new TI web site, which includes information for writers
etc. and also a list of published articles:

 BUT NOW TO DRACHENWALD TODAY:

AARNIMETSÄ (barony): The barony has now a new MoAS. Welcome on board Lady
Zlderdody Alena.
Hukka (canton): Trying to get a new MoAS. Korpi (A village in Hukka) is
applying for a canton status. The group has one A & S gathering every
week, every second week they have a dancing practice and every other they
just gather to chat. The group has taken part with one demo showing
children fencing and Medieval dancing. The group is busy in planning a
coming event, the Turney of Walrus on March 9th to 12th. Under planning
is also a dancing circle organised together with Hukka.
Humalasalo (canton): Including the ongoing shoe project the group has had
cooking gatherings and dancing sessions. In the future the group is
planning to have candle-making session. In the autumn event there was a
scroll making and calligraphy session arranged.
Kaarnemaa (canton): The group is very active. They have taken part with a
demo organised with other societies in Oulu. They have also taken care of
international relations by taking part with an event in Forstheim,
Nordmark. One evening planned to be just a cooking event crew up to a
village party. In the future the group is about to have an overall costume
making evening for newcomers. At the same time those more advanced could
emphasise on Iron Age Costumes.
 Pukka: No Moas, no report.
Unikankare: There are activities for almost very evening. Mondays and
Thursdays are reserved for A & S activities. ON Mondays the group has
dancing practices and on Thursdays the group has a sewing circle with
cooking to those interested. In the sewing circle the group has helped
fencer to create their fencing outfits and equipment.

ADAMASTOR (shire): Congratulates for the new status as a shire! The shire
was busy in arranging Their Royal Majesties visit. New clothes were made,
dancing practices were held regularly, the singing group practised weekly
and a new instrumental group including for example a lute and a violin and
as this group had so much fun they are still playing together. So the MoAS
of Adamastor told me. Ladies of the shire has joined the Drachenwald
embroiderers* guild. The shire members were pleased with Queen Anna*s
gift, two calligraphy books. In the coming Yule feast the cooks* guild are
planning to experiment with open fire cooking.

AD FLUMEN CAERULUM (Incipient shire): To borrow group*s MoAses words the
group has waken up from hundred*s years sleep and has now a new MoAS and a
long but very good report. Lady Katherina Woinovich has taken care of the
MoAS job and I wish her good times and energy.
Since they organized the kingdom A+S competition three years ago the
group has gone through several changes that have had an effect to the
public activity of the group. However, personal projects were done and to
encourage the group I have included all the info here:
Lord Markus is making an ongoing effort in finding new sources for
fabric, trim, lace, buttons and additional odds and ends coming handy for
A+S projects. He also went to an occasional event selling his finds to the
populace. He could also be found at Wisby for the last two years. He also
has one unfinished late period doublet, which he promised to finish with
the help of our most accomplished seamstress Barbara and her husband Jean.
He is also our Seneschal and constantly trying to find new members.
Lord Jean and Barbara: Barbara is very good at playing the fabric game
and as she is only allowed to buy new fabric when some other fabric has
been made into garb, there is constantly work in progress. She finished
her Irish dress just recently and will start on a new Elizabethan soon. In
between she is helping the rest of us with her expertise in making and
adapting patterns and other sewing related things. Two more Irish and a
Burgundian dress are waiting in the line. She is also making my birthday
present, a new cotehardie. She learned card weaving in school and if time
permits will show the rest of us how that works. In the course of her
studies to become a physical therapist she must attend courses in
woodworking, leather working, bookbinding, metalworking, pottery, weaving
and some additional arts and crafts where she is trying to get as much SCA
projects done as possible. Barbara is also the Marshal in training and
owns a set of plate armour for which she will be making a gambeson. She
and her husband Jean also attended a book binding a course in calligraphy,
and both are encing. Barbara is also interested in music. Jean has a suit
of armour where the gambeson is not finished. All necessary material is
somewhere in their chests and some parts are even cut and our pattern is
an actual gambeson borrowed from Lord Justin. Jean also constantly fiddles
around with his "hosen" to get 'the perfect pattern'. He is quite far into
perfection. He has made some tries into Italian Renaissance Houppelandes,
garb nearing completition soon. He was and is also our Herald, he promised
to resubmit Barbara's and my device.
Cornelia has now a really impressive Stock of velvet T-tunics and her
last project was a black Tabard with a painted Griffin where the details
are highlighted by embroidery. Her tunics are more 'Arthurian' looking in
style but nevertheless good-looking. She is making men's garb as her
persona is a man based on the figure of Guy of Gisbourne a Norman noble.
She has at least one hood and matching tunic set to finish.
Lady Katherina Woinovich herself managed to finish her and in between she
also finished her Houppelande + Headband and undergarment and Belt and
bag. This year she finished a surcoat to go over the before-mentioned
cotehardie and a new veil to match the style. She has also helped others
with their sewing projects like Alexandra. For her we made a (very) late
period split sleeve doublet, for which we made the pattern by the 'tape a
T-shirt to body and cut' - method. They also made a T-tunic with a under
tunic. Alexandra*s next project will be a leather belt stamped with Celtic
design to go with the tunic.
Our only knight Sir Wiglav did marry out of Vienna into the countryside
and managed to find a small group of would be fighters to be honed and
shaped. They are about a 21/2 hours drive away from the main part of the
people. Nevertheless we try to get to their fighters practice once a
month.
Currently they are making armour so they do not have to share one set of
loner armour anymore.
 Embroidery.
Irene makes beautiful gobelins. In Summer when Barbara, Jean, Alexandra
and Katherina managed a small stall at a little festival on Eggenburg
Castle she at least had been working on one. Katherina started to do some
embroidery work, too.
 Cooking
The group has a big part of cooking: Lord Jean, Claudia and Katherina do
occasional cookouts where they present 'new' old dishes to the rest of our
group. Just recently Katherine acquired one (facsimile) edition of a 15th
century German cookbook and one edition of the cookbooks(15th century)
available in the Austrian National Library. Katherina owns also about 10
other medieval cookbooks, herbals and medical works (most editions give
the original text also). Jean and Katherine also attended a course for
medieval cooking, the author of one of the new cookbooks (Austrian
Nat.Lib.) held.
 Group activities since A + S 1996:
Demo at Bad Kreuzen the site of the A + S for their 850 year festival.
8.8.1997. Thanksgiving feast for the rest of the group combined with
sewing workshop in Eggenburg where they had a booth at a theme festival
*fashion* were they presented various garbs and had Barbara explaining and
showing tablet weaving, and Embroidery. Demo Ronneburg some of your people
were manning a booth there .
Future projects: Quince preserve after a recipe of Nostradamus and if it
turns out good
The MoAS will translate it and write a short article for the TI. Members
will make some effort at armour so that they can go to fighter practice
more often and also they are planning to make a better webpage than the
one they have at http://www.larp.com/arioch/sca.shtml .

CHILDREN*S GUILD: A couple of moths ago I got a phonecall from Galwin
McGilliand who introduced himself as a candidate for the children*s guild
leader and yes, I was very happy. And so we have now new leader fro the
guild. We all wish him energy for taking care of the task:
Galwin McGilliland*s contact information will be found from the list of
Kingdom MoASes and guild contact info list below. Info about the guild can
be found from a web page: http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Realm/5939

as, they can never have enough people willing to teach Classes so in case
you*re willing to help please contact Galwin!

DRAGON NEEDLE EMBROIDERY GUILD: Most notably milady Rinske de Ridder of
Shire Adamastor wrote to the guild leader and informed that there are
several people interested in the guild in her area. She has also had a
couple other people e-mail me for more information. The leader hopes to
get a newsletter going (at least to those with e-mail) in the next couple
of months. She will also send a small article to the Dragon's Tale soon
listing members and their status as she knows it. She also needs to get
her regional deputies to report to me any new members or increase of
status of existing members that has occurred in the last six months or so.
At Kingdom University in Wales, Nov. 12-14, THL Samilya taught a class on
beginning embroidery, Countess Kira Leonovna Zemhadushina taught a class
in beginning couching, and THLord Hudd de Peth taught a class on the
Bayuex Tapestry. Lady Rhieinwen Cyfarwydd ferch Angharad is now a
journeyman in the guild, having completed her badge and her chatelaine.
The Countess Kira Leonovna Zemhadushina told THL Samilya that she is
interested in being the guild leader when Samilya leaves next late
summer/early fall. Good to see continuation; DREI EICHEN (Barony): The
barony has a new MoAS, Ydebergis of ten Bergen (Inge Puetz).

POLDERSLOT (shire): With the end of Summer, shire*s regular groups have
started up again; dancing and fencing in the same acoustically awful hall
as last year, singing under the inspired leadership of Janneke, one of
shire*s newer members, who teaches a bit of singing technique along with
multivoice music (and a wonderful ghostly round you should ask us about)
to a group of about 8 singers. The dance music group meets a bit more
irregularly, and now consists of five people, Siebeth having returned from
a few months break to play---among others--the tenor recorder, and
Janneke, who plays her self built psaltery. The group is starting up a
bi-monthly arts and sciences evening on Monday night, but since Shire has
spread quite a bit geographically in the past few years, these draw small
(but industrious!) crowds. They have had two Shiregatherings, the
September one being most notable for its excellent pot luck food
(including two roast chickens with sauce, rice pancakes and sugared
spices) and a heroic and successful attempt to move a solid wood table to
the first floor through the outside window. The second one took place a
week ago, when they went to an exhibition on archeological musical
instruments, with replica's of quite a few (including a wind organ powered
by four big bellows) which the public was allowed to play. The shop sold
pig bladders to make "rommelpotten", which three of the memebers bought,
so watch out for weird wounds from Polderslot camp! In between these two
shire*s Knick Knack event took place, where Deirdre (deputy moas) ran the
a&s competition, while Hannah was in the kitchen with Lady Regina, who was
then cooking her first feast (fifteenth century French food), and will
allready be doing her second for Sinterklaas. The competition at Knick
Knack was won by Morwenna and Dougalds entry of a complete set of a
cotehardi, surcote and belt with mounts (cast by Dougald), which came with
a nice booklet for documentation with color copies of the pictures the set
was based on. An admirable project! Demaking another Elisabethan dress,
working on blackwork and bringing one of her projects from goldsmith's
school, a silver Viking horseshoe clasp to the a&s competition at His
Excellency Goetz's Investiture. The coming A & S event will be the Peer's
Prize

Tourney at the Sinterklaas event. The idea is to have all contestants sit
in the hall with their entries, documentation, and perhaps something to
work on. The main object is to encourage everyone to talk about the
projects that are about, since this is not just a table full of entries,
but actually an opportunity to see and talk to the artist behind the
entry. The Peer's Prize part behind it, lies in the fact that they've
asked all attending peers to bring little prizes or tokens to give for the
projects of their choice (well documented work, a good start in their
favorite craft, funniest entry, or whatever).

SCHWARZ-LOCH (incipient shire): Groups* new MoAS is Lady DeBrowe. I hope
she could send her full contact into (mundane name, address, telephone
number and a possible e-mail contact for the new Kingdom MoAs, THL Catrin.
Her contact info is mentioned below.

  The group has an A & S meeting every 3rd Monday monthly. A & S classes
have included heraldry, shoe making, embroidery, crocheting and court
courtesies, the last class was held by Galwin. Sewing class is held every
Sunday. The group hold also a public demo were over 200 mundanes attended.

THEMESREACH (shire): The group has a new MoAS, Katherine, (Patricia Hunt)
Phone: +44-(0)171-873-1146 ( or 2779) E-mail: patricia.hunt@kcl.ac.uk. I
hope she could send her full contact into (mundane name, address) for the
new Kingdom MoAs, THL Catrin as we ll as for the Isles regional Kingdom
MoAS deputy. Their contact info is mentioned below.

VIELBURGEN (shire): As lord Allan*s deputy, Heidi Springfield has taken
over the responsibilities but have kept Lord Allan as a deputy since he
still wishes to contribute in this area.
The Shire has been very active recently, with a resurgence of classes and
a respectable amount of attendence. Some of more recent classes included
beginning tablet weaving, the role of the jester, beginning heraldry,
beginning crochet, and autocrating. They also have a monthly SCA Dance
class.
Teachers have already been lined up for classes through February, 2000.
As the group has received many recent additions to the Shire, most of
classes have returned to the "beginner" level until the basics have been
covered. Lots of personal projects are also ongoing (Julia von Kyrburg -
Renaissance Gown,
Banbha - 2 bodices, chemise, 3 skirts, parti-colored tunic, winter cloak,
counted thread-work, Roibeard Mor de Barre - research in medieval
ingredients, Head Chef for recent event, Rachel of Vielburgen - 2
