No suittable place have been found for the fencing that they have been planned, but there are some interest from the group. At the end of October there were a combined fighter practice and autumn feast with around 40 persons attending the banquet. Invited was the local Tolkien-society, and also some from the Swedish group Nordrike. Singing, dancing and storytelling was featured. The barony has hade the following events:
Baronial Investiture, Food Fight, The Walrus tourney, Anna's Day dance

Helped to arrange the Kingdom A&S University in Estonia.

Local cantons and other groups have been active in their own, humble way (mostly crafts circles and individual efforts on various fields). Personally, I've started to fulfill my goals as a MoAS: to have A&S articles in the baronial newsletter, and to have a little something at every event I go to, the little something being lectures, workshops or just a MoAS roadshow ( = "I'm here, come ask questions or just talk to me").

Merry Christmas!

The news in brief are:
Livia is currently doing practical work for her school in England and planed to meet with Master Paul and visit a couple of museums. She will also get a new bow for Marcus as his Lady is also starting archery.

Which brings us to research for the Hunting season II event:
We will make garb and archery equipment for the event during the summer. And I will do some test cooking for the evening Pot dinner. As well as finish my tent for sleeping in it (a big Pavilion where I need to finish the side panels).

We need to add pots to our field kitchen and will probably again attend the blacksmithing seminar in Hungary to make some more items (Candidates are Marcus, his Lady, Alessandra and my self).

Right now I am test cooking finger food for a Demo in May, where we will show some of the crafts we have people for. ;-) (spinning, tablet weaving, archery, embroidery).

Arnulf is a member of a minstrel group (Tuifelsstimme) in Austria and earns money with his music . He will play at the may demo.

Sir Wigglaf and his group is still making armor to fill any gaps in the equipment of his fighters. Else we do not hear a lot of what is happening in upper Austria.

The article for the A&S publication is about a third done, and will progress if my computer at home permits.

Katharina

So here is a summary of what happened during the rest of the Year:
We finished the hunting garb and the accoutrements for archery for Iffeshain and my self. The tent is still only partly done but is in progress right now.

For the May demo we made a patch of delicious Globi and some breadspreads. Unfortunatly we had an out of the way space so only a few people found their way to our site.

Livia is back in Vienna and finished schooling so hopefully she will have more time now to help us with sewing.

We did not manage to attend the courses in Hungary but are planing them for this year (2002).

(This site would also be a wonderful site for a Hands On A&S experience as they have pottery, blacksmithing, leatherworking, woodworking, and basketweaving on site possibilities.)

HS II was a success and the boar stew based on some similar medieval recipes was delicious. Our Field kitchen now sports two more pots and will be updated again with various implements. HS III is in planing already.

Arnulf and his group were very busy (playing in a Documentation on Super RTL about Kinghts) and he is making a living out of his music. Additional he is our new chatelaine and brought in a few new members and interested persons.

Sir Wigglaf and his group were set on mundane life and did not have much time to spare.

Most of us managed to complete unfinished garb to some extend.

If there is any possibility to retrieve data for the article on Documentation I will do so.

Unfortunately my time is limited and I still have not replaced my computer at home. So please be patient.

K.

Greifenthal

Greetings Your Excellencies, Ladies and Lords,

First of all, I must apologize for not having handed in any report for the last year. On the other hand, there have been no SCA activities in Greifenthal during this period, so this long silence may be explained, if not excused.

Since I have been the only officer in this Shire for the last year, this is a summary report again, comprising the Seneschal's business as well as Arts & Sciences, financial matters, heraldry stuff and recruiting aspects. I kindly ask Your Excellencies, Lords and Ladies to glean from it all appropriate information useful for your respective department.

At present, the Shire of Greifenthal has exactly five paying members (see list attached). There are some more people out in its fair lands who are either "playing along" or already full SCA members. Their status will be reported in the next Seneschal's report, to be submitted by the new Seneschal (see further down). The populace comprises heavy fighters, light fighters, archers, people experienced in cooking, musicians, dancers, people experienced in garb-making, historians, etc. The Shire also has acquired some useful equipment, e.g. a pavilion, grill, banners, tabards (see further down). At present, there are no officers, except for an acting Seneschal. New officers shall be elected soon, however, and duly warranted. We have two people with an AoA, however, their names and arms still need to be submitted to the Laurel King of Arms. The basic heraldry information is obviously available in the Shire.

There used to be a time when Greifenthal disposed of quite a considerable amount of money. At that period, about 2 years back, the Shire funds amounted to around 1.200 DM. From this money, several purchases were made. First and before all, at a price of 900 DM, the Shire got an ex-East German Army tent (5 x 5 m), which was decorated with its coat of arms. There now even is a banner of the Shire which fits on top of the central pole. For another 150 DM, the Shire bought a grill on a tripod, so as to be able to cook things over a campfire. There were other, minor purchases (e.g. tissue for tabards and banners), so that not very much of the Shire funds remained, when our last exchequer moved houses without leaving a forwarding address, so that the Shire funds and accounts have gone missing with him.

Well, I am happy to report that the differences of opinion between the Greifenthal Seneschal (myself) and the "Free Knighthood at Munzenberg" (Freie Ritterschaft zu Muenzenberg - FRM, Internet: http://www.freie-ritterschaft-zu-muenzenberg.de) about which I reported to his Excellency, Duke Matthew in my last two Seneschal reports (2000-03 and 2000-04) have been settled to our satisfaction. Indeed, we (i.e. myself and spouse) have become full members of the FRM with all rights and privileges since July 2001. The slanderous attacks which had been started in the Internet against the SCA in general and the Greifenthal Seneschal in particular were apparently based on the individual initiative of the webmaster of the FRM, who was expelled from this Society in early 2001. Another member of the FRM, who was behind the attacks together with the webmaster, decided to resign voluntarily.

Indeed, the FRM has come a long way over the last 18 months. This is the second medieval society which originated out of contacts with the SCA in the Greifenthal area during my period as Seneschal and their membership, at the beginning of the year 2002, has just surpassed the 100-mark. Over the last year, it has organised a medieval concert, a children's party and a couple of demos. Actually, the FRM puts a strong emphasis on making children welcome and teaching them about the Middle Ages. This idea was gleaned from the ongoing activities in the SCA, which those members of the FRM who have had some SCA experience (e.g. at "Arthurian Riddle Quest" in A.S. XXXV) explicitly appreciated. The big event which will decide about the future of the FRM in the medieval scene will be a Medieval Fayre and Festival, which will take place at Munzenberg Castle on 1 and 2 June this year.

The FRM is, of course, still a very new society, which just has demarcated its territory and is enviously defending it against any assumed intruders -;). I'm sorry to say that the SCA, for the time being, also counts among the "assumed intruders". We are trying to remedy this situation, but this will need time. We are confident, however, that we can re-establish confidence and a fruitful co-operation between the FRM and the SCA, just by "living the SCA example". We already have a couple of FRM members who used to be with the SCA and are interested in "living" an SCA-style feast again. Maybe we can bring them along to St. Mathieu's in Turmstadt. Our personal copies of the "Known World Handboke" and the "SCA New Fighter's Handboke" are also on loan to the Marshal of the FRM, who was desperately looking for some basic safety regulations, in order to prevent people playing around with live steel swords from hurting each other. In the long run, there may even be chances of holding SCA-sponsored events at Munzenberg Castle (which the FRM is defending most enviously at present).

As I explained in my last report to Duke Matthew, my term of office as Seneschal has come to an end in July 2001 (I took over in July 1996, from Lady Viviane d'Aguillon). I've carried on as "acting" Seneschal, since there seemed to be no possible solution in sight. However, things have changed again, and it appears now that the future existence of Greifenthal is not at stake. M'lord Godfrey the Wanderer (aka Russell North) has contacts with several people in the Greifenthal area who are either already full SCA members or are planning to join. Also, he has most graciously offered to take over as my successor. Obviously, this will have to be confirmed by vote of the populace. We are busy arranging such a meeting, at which not only the Seneschal but also all other officers need to be elected anew, but the date of such a meeting can unfortunately only be after the deadline for this report. I will therefore leave it to my successor to report to you about the future of Greifenthal.

I would like to seize this occasion in order to thank all the people who have supported Greifenthal over the last five years. Without all of you, Greifenthal wouldn't be where it stands today.

We have not had much attendance at our A6Ss since last report. This has mainly been due to deplyments, Field Rotations, and individuals PCSing or leaving.

We still hold our A4S on the 3rd Thursday of each month and rotate between a simply movie / Social night; to a Schoolatic styled Arts and Crafts ( A4S ) night.

I anticipate a surge in participation since we have recently aquired 5 new members. this past weekend was a prime example as we spent from Friday evening thru Sunday evening shopping for materials and manufacturing garb for many of the new individual.

We will be setting up a new schedual after our January Buisness meeting since we will be holding elections for new Officers at that date. this will allow the new Minister of A&S to develope their own ideas and projects.

If you need any other information please let me know and I will try to get it to you...

Report Minister of A&S Schwarzloch end of Year 2001.
Most of our time with A&S this year has be dedicated towards garb making for new members, classes on research, shoe making, trips out into the economy for purchases and to instruct new members where and what to buy for garb, brewing, and various individual A&S projects.

We have still been holding our alternating social verses A&S projects per month, ( one month an A&S project or assistance with those who are working on various independent projects; then the next month a movie / Social night to help with various A&S questions, review movies which contained period themes or garb and to allow new members to have a general open social and discussion night on any topics which come up.

This has proven extremely useful in our ever changing military community. Our new Minister of A&A Michelle Smith along with a few others have already planned out a general operational line up of projects and classes to come, yet, I will allow her to render that report 8-)

Over all it has been a rewarding and enjoyable year as Minister of A&S for Schwarzloch.

Flintheath

Flintheath members have been working on a number of different projects over the past two months.

Lady Trinite Ducalon hosted and taught a class on black work embroidery on Oct 21st. She had four ladies attend the class and begin work on two small black work embroidery projects. Lady Trinite completed a black work needle case during the month. Lady Trinite also has been working on a number of scrolls and finished 3 illuminated pieces. She also volunteered to teach a class on mask making at the Flintheath Yule Ball in December.

Aldwyn Ducalon made some lengths of rope and completed a rope bed for his mother Lady Trinite to ease her camping trips.

Hannah attended Lady Trinite's black work class

Aidan LeMaster worked on patterns for garb.

Ozbeg did some work on Katherine's helm in preparation for fighting.

Katherine did quite a number of projects during the months. Finished a green hat with aid from Lady Genna, created a pattern and cut for Elizabethan gown and corset, attended a class on purse making. Worked with Aidan to make a body block. Attended Lady Trinites black work class. In the areas of research, took many photos in the Prado museum and other museums in Spain, continued research on a purse project.

As-Sadaf continued working her crochet project, attended classes in Raqs Sharqi in preparation of a performance in December, and attended Lady Trinite's black work class. Started a mint liquer, researched local sources for an upcoming class on brewing. She is also hosting a class in simple banner making, and making simple favors for the Flintheath Yule Ball. She has cut and primed blanks for painting some new directional signs for shire events.

Future classes and research trips are planned for Flintheath in the month of December to include a 'Behind the Scenes of the Fitzwilliam Museum' in Cambridge; Meads, Melomels, Metheglins - Brewing Made Easy; and Liquers for the Lazy. Another field trip discussed was to an archery factory.

You should have reports previously sent from Lady Genna for this year, and my previous report from September of this year. In general, this branch seems to be very active in A&S with many relatively new members, which means lots of classes to be taught on basic SCA projects from garb to armouring, outfitting a camp to creating a feast for thirty.

Guild

Embroidery Guild

Greetings

I am currently the Guildmistress for the Embroidery Guild and was appointed by Caitlin last year in May. I must admit, to my shame, that I had not done a great deal since I became Guildmistress to promote the activities of the Guild. I also did not submit a report as required in November last year.

I have however been thinking about the Guild a lot and would like to make some changes to it. However, part of my problem is that although Caitlin wanted to discuss the charter with me, she never came round to it, with the consequence that I have never seen it and have no idea where I can get hold of it.

Secondly I have been unable to find any records of who has gone through the various levels in the Guild and where it is standing at present. I did ask for information on this the Drachenwald List but had no response so far.

Thirdly the badges that guild embroider for use by their Majesties are very difficult and a fair number of people are put of by this. I would like to simplify them while retaining their heraldic correctness. I would also like to extend the badges to include a general populace badge.

I know there are deputies in the regions of the Drachenwald but have had very little success in tracing them.

In order to make the Guild viable and effective for a geographically diverse kingdom such as ours will need a lot of work and effort and I am looking forward to doing this. I would appreciate any thoughts or information from you in this regard.

Thank you
