15.12 AS XXXV
(Report covers the last quarter of 2000)
Seasons Greetings!
It is hard to believe that another year has passed and we are about to
step
forward into another century. Just recently passed was the Kingdom
University that was hosted by the Shire of Fire March in Naples Italy.
Our
University Chancellor did an outstanding job, Thank you Master Terafan,
(His report will follow at a later date.) And to the Autocrat, Mistress
Kira .
So many projects are in the works for the coming year. One which is ever
present on my mind is a special arts and sciences newsletter. Since this
is
an expensive venture, several auctions will be taking place, the first to
take place at the Coronation of Peregrine and Melusine in Dublin, Ireland.
The second will take place at the Kingdom Arts and Sciences Competition.
In
the Shire of Aros in Nordmark which will take place on April 20-22-2001
Several changes to the Arts and Sciences policies have been made
A standardized arts and sciences criteria form:
The reasoning behind this is to unify the Kingdom's art and sciences
competitions. It will make travel easier in entering competitions as the
same criteria will be used in the judging no matter where you travel to.
Please make no mistake though, there is always room for themed or special
competitions. (Ie... people's choice)
A special Laurels competition at Kingdom Arts and Sciences:
In addition to the regular competition that will take place, a "Laurels
only" competition will also take place. Although not mandatory, it is
highly
encouraged for all of the Laurels to enter. This is a way for our Kingdom
to
see how things are done correctly and who to learn more from than the
Laurels
themselves. Mistress Oriane and Master Terafan are graciously providing
the
travelling prize for this competition, I am extremely grateful. Thank
you.
University to be added:
A University will run in conjunction to the Kingdom Arts and Sciences
Competition.
Since there have been so many groups that have not been reporting and such
a
majority have been on the "Black List" (meaning more than one report
missed)
I have decided to clean the slate in hopes that reporting will get better.
Thus with this New Year we will start anew.

Arts and science report from Nordmark, November 2000.
Hi.
It's time for another report from Nordmark. There is some new MoASes since
the last report. Aros, Attemark, Gotvik and Juneborg. So I hope the
activities will soon be better. I will travel down to Baggeholm next
weekend
on their 5-year party. So I will check if they are interested in having a
local MoAS and have arts and science activities.

Here it is, though, from the windy and dark Aarnimetsä, the MoAS report
15th
November, 2000:
HUMALASALO, canton: No report.
HUKKA, canton: Regular meeting are carried on as usual (crafts on tuesdays
and 'unofficial' libraries on Wednesdays). They're also planning a cooking
evening and other such happenings. They have already started the planning
of
the oncoming Crown Tourney in the Spring, which will probably tie a few
hands on the way. Good luck!
KAARNEMAA, canton: No report. And she has always been punctual with
reports
pages long. Perhaps something has happened. I will look into the matter.
KORPI, canton: Everything going on as normal. They're also planning the
Tourney of the Walrus already. We'll stay on the edge till we know who
wins
this year...
POUKKA, canton: I had a talk with the MoAS of poukka and she promised to
make the effort and send me reports. They are having some regular meetings
with varied subjects, and are also planning the oncoming Anna's Day's
Dance
early December, with singing practices and so forth. We shall see how it
goes! poukka has many talented young female singers, which will surely be
a
pleasure to listen to.
UNIKANKARE, canton: Regular meetings go as usual (they're keeping busy)
and
also a musical circle has been founded to occupy the Wednesday evenings.
Also, the cooking evenings are up and running again with meetings every
couple of weeks.
I am actually quite pleased to see how well the music has been adopted
here
in Aarnimetsä lately, for I remember when I first joined there was very
few
peopl singing and even less playing an instrument. This is after all, en
evident part of the SCA.
MIEHONLINNA, incipient canton: They're already planning their future
canton
event in May, and keeping themselves busy thus.
SALPAKALLIO, village: Much isn't apparently happening. They're still
planning on emerging with the canton of Humalasalo, and thus meetings are
scarse. Reporting will also move to be under the Humalasalo MoAS, so we
shall see...
SAVILAHTI, village: a lively little new village, which we just visited
last
weekend. They're having regular meetings every week and apparently people
are starting to appear in the meetings. They're hosting a little christmas
party with A&S, fencing, dancing, good food, and good company.
TORNA, village: They are definetly busy - mainly making armour 8yes,
still),
and from the sound of it... WOW! They are doing every kind of armour and
wheaponry I ever thought posible and I think if someone won't stop them
they'll invent more. I mean, they're doing a gambeson by hand! Thes people
are fanatics. They have also plans of becoming a canton soon, and this
will
leed to the change of officer. The MoAS of Torna at the moment, Haakon
Pikinokka, is wearing too many hats being at the same time the herald,
MoAS,
etc. He will though be giving up the job as soon as someone suitable walks
by. I'll be sad to see him go, for he did surely an amazing job.
That was that. more news next time. I'm also keepng an eye out for a
successor and will hopefully find one during the next quarter. I already
have someones fixed in my gaze...
Until then, I remain
Your servant, &c.

Florida was beautiful and Lord William de Cordoba and his wife promised
to
divulge information on the process of hardening leather with hot paraffin.
This will enable me to make a new archer's armguard and other pieces of
armory. Since the last report I only managed to acquire more "further
projects" as I bought some more Leather stamps /shears/leather ...
(leatherworking goodies for about 300 US). I also added to my library a
book
on med. furniture (and
some more fabric,.....)
Gilbert de Gisbourne mka Conny managed to finish 2 Velvet Tunics finished
with trim and pearls, 1 Cape from felted wool, 1 undertunic and her
banner: a griffon or on a field sable painted on with fabric colors.
Livia and Jean mka Barbara and Johannes have been to Paris and took a LOT
of
pictures in the Louvre (Paintings) and at Cluny (Tapestries).
Markus and his Lady are building a rope bed and are making some new garb
for
her.
Arnulf our Minstrel is by now earning money with his music.
Blauwasser
Blauwasser did a little in the last quarter. We sewed 16 pennons for use
at
Crown Tourney in Meadowmarsh. We conducted a garb workshop with 6 members
attending. Terafan brewed mead for Niebelungen, brewed cherry wine, and
brewed beer. Terafan and Dubheasa painted 3 more tapestries.
Drachensheim.
Michael of Kennsdale- 1 batch of beer completed and 3 batches of mead in
the
works.
Hans the Peasant- a carved leather belt with Viking motifs in progress,
carved leather sword sheath completed, as well as a carved leather knife
sheath completed.
Alvilda in fogr- a carved leather pouch, one huge pair of patchwork brais,
one fur cloak-all completed, and one batch of wine in progress.
Isengau
Here at Isengau we have been continuing our every-other Thursday A & S
meeting tradition. We've got everybody sewing new garb for the upcoming
season of fests. We are planning two brewing workshops at our place --
one
mead, one beer --once we get all the ingredients that we need.
Trevelyon sewed his first pair of pants! They fit and looked like real
pants, too!
Marcellina and Duncan the Shepard are getting married this summer, and are
planning on doing a period wedding. The Italian Renaissance is probably
going to be the theme. We are all looking into that time period for
outfits
we can
make by July. They are both working on heraldic embroiderer for each
other
(that they started before the engagement...).
Maximilian is working on another pair of 14th C turn-welt shoes. This
time
with a true period seam. Margerite and Maximilian are looking for
recommendations for any good books about the 14th Century, especially in
Germany, about anything from clothing to daily life to politics. Can
anybody give us some good leads?
Monarch's Rest
The Canton has not been doing any organized Arts & Sciences projects or
events. Several of the local members have continued their personal
projects
in sewing, filking, song writing and armouring. Members of the Canton
regularly meet at the Barony's Monday evening social and Wednesday evening
fighter practice. There are no A&S events scheduled for the Canton for
the
remainder of 2000 A.D.
As to personal projects - I am aware that Lord Gorlan continues to write
some very entertaining songs/filks/tunes. Lady Jayne continues to sew
dresses with a newly arrived Lady in Mannheim. Lady Christine continues
to
work on armour. Lady Cornelia continues to work on scrolls.
Polderslot
A&S activity in the group during the quarter: We had a bit of a Summer
break
after Polderslaughter, starting up again in
September, when regular meetings started up again (see below). Knick Knack
was at 27 October, with a Courtly Love theme, which didn't really seem to
catch on. Many different things took place at the event as usual: archery,
heavy fighting, and an A&S competition, to which Gilliam had sabatons
(armored shoes), Claudwick did woodworking and Douwe had a weaving
project.
Also there were some extra bardic activities: a bardic swap table, to
which
Gorlan generously brought his collection of songbooks and a photocopier
(!),
and Ingeborg, the Guildmistress of the Minstrels Guild came to the event
and
made Janneke and Cailin Journeymen in the Guild. The feast at Knick Knack
was prepared by Lady Laura and Lord Jehan from Mediterranean recipes, and
was excellent. At the last Shire gathering a few people practiced some
calligraphy, more or less inspired by the last minute scrollwork I did
with
Bertrik for Knick Knack.
List of regular and irregular A&S meetings during the quarter
More or less regular meetings are: biweekly dancing/fencing; we've just
decided to discontinue the fencing for a while, since there have been very
few fencers at the practice, and the teacher is with maternity leave. We
are
hoping to put a bit more life into the dancing by working more on new
dances
and doing some more life music. Hopefully we will end up with a few more
people in the next six months, since the group is barely large enough
anymore to be able to pay for the
rent of the hall, and this practice has been and still is important to the
continuity of things between events.
singing (both choral and single melody stuff (bit of a vocabulary
challenge
this, hope I got it right),
bimonthly A&S night (bring your own project), dance music (instrumental),
meets at the whim of the three to five members
of the group. Shire gatherings (usually at someone's home, people bring
projects and pot luck food)
Coming A&S events in the next quarter
Unchanged from last report: I'm looking at organizing a shoemaking
workshop
that promises you at least one pair of finished shoes in a weekend
(starting
to pick a few dates, about 15 people are interested), and hoping to move
along the wall hanging project...
Lady Hilde is looking for actors to do a medieval play, inspired by the
Open
Air Museum project; we should be starting seriously on other things for
the
Open Air Museum in the coming months.
Projects of the populace
Hm, some of these I've already scattered around; I'm a bit scatterbrained
at
the moment. Deredere has finished her 16th ct Flemish outfit which looks
very charming; Lady Gerbrich made a scroll, her first; Claudwick has made
shoes; I'm doing a bit of illumination and looking at adapting tunic
outfits
to Viking costume for Coronation. Floris may get around to doing a bit of
enameling, inspired by Coronation. Daniel is doing some interesting
woodwork
(a surprise soon to be presented).
Schwarz loch
Not much has went on with Arts and Sciences under our last A&S Person. I
have temporarily taken over the position as well as the Chroniclers also
in
an effort to correct this situation. We presently are looking at an A&S
Meeting every third ( 3rd ) Tuesday of the month, Alternating between an
actual Crafts night and then a ( Period Style ) Movie night. In this way I
hope to also make available the opportunity to those who have or was
unable
to finish their previous project the time to do so, while the children and
others are enjoying a movie or two. This will also allow me to give more
time to those who may be having a problem with any particular project.
Turmstadt
Turmstadt has an MoAS and is not dead.
Celanna
The currently nameless shire (rejection stings!) has been keeping up with
the same A&S projects as before. We have acquired a new member who does
leatherworking and metal working for a living (lucky!) and plans to carry
it
over to the SCA. He has already begun on a signet ring for, well,
actually
the minister of arts and sciences (who is still in the army). I have been
helping the shire members with researching new costumes and improving
their
own, as well as weaving,
sewing, and embroidery; Alexios has been working with another new member
(who is a musician) as well as illumination, cordial making and
calligraphy;
the MoAS is active in making new garb and manuscript illumination; Angelo
is
currently involved in researching sword making and period metallurgy;
George
is working on getting together some Viking garb,
Valeria is in Wales, and Eleni is always making new garb.

5) List of regular and irregular meetings
We do have regular meetings.
Singing and Instrumental groups meet every week
Armouring and Dancing meets once a month
We also have a monthly A&S evening. Recent evenings have included
calligraphy, soap-making, period headware, gorget-making...quite a broad
range. The next one will be on making rose-petal beads.
I plan another A&S competition/show for next year, but have not decided on
timing
My own forays into leatherwork continue. I've almost completed a leather
fencing doublet, and am working on a second one for our Herald.
Guntram, our Herald, has built several warp-weighted horizontal tablet
looms,
and is currently working on one for me.
We are both working on leather gorgets for fencing.
At least two ladies in the Shire are working on cloth fencing doublets,
being
Ladies Jehane de Huegenin and Jean Craig. Lady Jean (or Sister Mairi Jean)
is
also working on heralic cushions to ease our comfort when we picnic
outdoors.
My Lady, I am not sure if you are aware of how our Shire is structured -
we
cover a whole country, with two main groups at 1000 miles apart. For this
reason, I have a deputy in the Northern reaches of the Shire. To my
gratification, she has recently (with some prodding on my part) instituted
the regular monthly A&S evenings that we in the South have found so useful
in
exciting interest. In order that you may be properly informed, I have
included her quarterly report to me in full, below.
Storm Tidings is our Shire newlsetter, Bmew is Bartholomew, the good
Caterina's husband
___________________________________________________________________
Unto Thomas the well-read, greetings from the North.
In Storm Tidings you asked for as many gentles as possible to give you
their
A&S activities. I can try to fill you in on both a personal and
ministerial
matters- is that what you want? I would hate to be thought of as idle, you
know!
Personally- I've just made myself an embroidery bag. I'm embroidering
badges. I make clothes. (Promised the lord of the house a doublet, but I
had
to make myself another snood first, since I lost my first one at a demo.)
I
practice the recorders, all four of them, and my singing, by way of some
tapes of madrigals. I try to work out new dances. I have promised to help
with the bunting, which I will eventually. (Promise!) I bake bread
regularly. (Sorry, I know that's scraping the bottom of the barrel.)
Bmew. brews, does leatherwork (shoes, belts), practices calligraphy, looks
at his wisby-coat-long-in-progress from time to time, writes the
occasional
poem, annoys the herald, and reads like anything.
Ministerially: We've had two A&S evenings: leatherwork and bunting. (The
upcoming one is going to be full of interesting tidbits: braiding, bobbin
lace, weaving, net making, etc.) Embroidery evenings are once a month,
even
if they sometimes mutate into something else. Armouring and fighting are
at
least once a month. I have hooked in some potential madrigal singers and
will be seeing them in a week's time, and a whole group of Morris dancers
were supposed to meet us last week but had to cancel. That's pending, and
has promise. Biringeira continues to be our most well-studied and talented
member when it comes to cooking and clothing. I am thinking about a dance
day in the near future!
That concludes my quarterly Arts and Science Report
Yrs, in service,

Report from the Isles
Greetings onto HL Caitrin, the Kingdom MoAS,
Following is the very thin report I have received for this quarter from
the
Isles Region. Enclosed is also a few reports I received after I sent my
last
quarter report. I am sending this a few days early and I might yet
received
a few more reports, but I will be out of touch from now until after Thanks
Giving. If I do received any other reports I will include them in next

nothing special has happened but we are alive and kicking general arts and

to
places like the Wallis Collection,National Gallery, and Victoria and

museum. A few dance practices, halted because of the dificulty of finding
a
hall Filippa Ginevra Francesca di Lucignano gave an some informal talk on
medieval attitudes to contraception, death, etc. Lamas Feast Co-presented
Crown. We have made a good turn out at most of the events over the summer
Flintheath:
As almost no people turned up to the meeting I have no clue what has been
done in the month of Aug by the Shire. All I have to report is Wolfram is
still working on Chainmail. I of course have been doing calligraphy like
usual and that Alizabeth is working on more costumes also like usual.
Elizabethan breakfast went well. The competitions where not really well
entered but the following results came forth. Trish from Thames Reach won
best costume and there was two other entries. A new shire member won the
cooking comp with a really nice sweet meat pie, there was one other entry
in this. No one entered best presentation or entertainment, but everyone
enjoyed themselves and asked that I do more next year.
As I have received no other reports, as stated above, this is the end.

At the moment we have 27 people that have shown interest in the guild
(list
of members enclosed).
Most of the guild activities so far have been me introducing the guild to
Aarnimetsä people in different events. This info has included explanation
of
the guild rules and introduction and history of the Drachenwald badges. I
have also written two articles about the guild to the local newsletter
Aarniwalkea.
This fall I also prepared Drachenwald badge embroidery kits to make the
start
easy to new members. Now at least 10 members have that kit and we should
get
some embroidered badges back from them in near future.
I planned to hold an introductory lesson & lesson on gold embroidery at
the
Border War event in the Northern Aarnimetsä in the end of November but
unfortunately I*m unable to attend that event because of mundane
activities.
Instead of that I*m going to hold the lesson on gold embroidery at Food
Fight
in the end of December.
You have probably heard that I am going to move away from Drachenwald
during
the next spring. Luckily lady Sunniva has promised to take over the guild
from me and continue the work. I*ll be guiding her until my move and pass
all
the guild papers to her.

Kingdom Minister of Children's Report
Galwin McGilliland
I have finished all but one Illuminated scroll out of 12 for those
children
which will be advancing to Journeyman Status in the guild and will be
present
at Crown Tourney. We are over 40
registered Children, yet will be losing at least four of these shortly
after
Crown due to Military moves and PCS's.
On the up swing we have just gotten two new families here in Schwarzloch,
one
of which has a Young son, so, will be gaining one new member in the
process.
I have submitted to their Majesties the names of 29 of all the children
presently registered for various Kingdom Awards. Some
of which I believe will be recognized at Crown As well. I am presently
once I
finish the last scroll will be updating all members files and the Website
also. Then I will be turning my attention to the Boffers Rules and
Submission
of same as I have been directed by the Crown and Kingdom Seneschal. After
that I have in the works a Card game using Heraldry (Historical and SCA ),
which I hope will redirect the children's interest towards this and away
from
bringing Pokemon Cards to events.
Also If all goes as planned I will have finished a simple interactive Dice
game for the children which should be ready for y trial run at Crown as
well.
At Crown we have scheduled a Pumpkin carving project, ( The pumpkins will
then go to light the feast hall that night, A Card Weaving Project, Put on
by
Felicitas if she is able to get away from work on time, and I have some
Materials to demonstrate basic Rope Weaving and thus allow some of the
children ( those
who have none ), the opportunity to get their very own Garb Belt. Plus any
other activities I can come up with at the time weather dependent. I have
also been working on a AKA Styled Archery format for the Children which I
am
having help with from the Captain
General of Archers, ( That is scheduled to be worked on after the Boffers
Rules are formalized and forwarded up ). And I have other scrolls to make
as
children advance as well. We have had larger turn outs at many event this
past Quarter, But, we need to make it plain and clear to the Adults, that
since we are having more children attend events, then certain precautions
on
the Adult activities must be better observed.
I find it hard sometimes to explain why so and so is kissing or squeezing
so
and so to a child when they point out that one or the other is married or
attached to some one else. Plus Gentlemen in Kilts need to pay more
attention
to Squatting or Kneeling when picking things up and tucking when Sitting.
:-)
Children see all....

Report: Minstrels Guild

Activity is still low, and the reasons still seem to be largely the same I
mentioned in my last report.
Good news in the never ending story of Bard's Night IV: Lady Valeria (Leda
Filippopoulou) of the (pre-incipient) Shire of Mynydd Gwyn (Wales) mailed
me
that the group would like to hold Bard's Night at the End of March 2001.
They
would organize the site and the feast and all the 'outside' stuff, and I'd
organize classes, competitions, and everything like that. Oh my... partly
organizing an event in Wales from Southern Germany... this is going to be
most interesting.
More good news: At Knick Knack XXX in Polderslot Lady Janneke von Suylen
(mka
Janneke van DenDraak) made Journeywoman in the Guild. She presented a
psalterion plus documentation as her journeyman's piece and sang a few
songs.
Another gentle whose SCA name I have written down somewhere in my notes
and
who was introduced to me as Thomas made Novice by singing a few songs, one
of
them with a self-composed melody, and reading a story to the
bardic circle.
Lord Jehan de Lorraine sent me the rest of the Guild's paperwork. It seems
that I already *had* everything, but at least now I *know* that I'm not
missing any document hidden somewhere.

The herbal interest group currently has five proud members and is moving
towards more activity (during summers...). All members except myself live
in Aarnimetsa and so the activity is mostly happening there. One member is
creating a medieval garden and trying out dyeing techniques, and there has
been exchange of letters and suggestions for exchanging seeds etc.
