15.9. AS XXXIV(Report covers the 3rd quarter of 1999)Greetings everybody,The colourful autumn is here. I had really nice time at the last Pennsic for this millennium and I made many new friends and noticed once again how wonderful people we have here in our Kingdom. Enjoy your skills in As & Ss and share your knowledge with e ach other*s. Next change to this is the coming Kingdom University. Take the best use of the wonderful settings and atmosphere of the event and the classes of course. Please note that I am going to hold A & S officers* meeting at the Kingdom University, Saturday 13th at 10 AM. I hope that seneschals of the groups that do not have a MoAS could attend the meeting. The meeting will more or less concern A & S polices and *Hot Topics* of A & S in Drachenwald => how to make things work. This is my second last report to you as the Kingdom A & S minister. My successor, THL Caitrin O*Sullivan (Julie Sauer, 9 Whitewood Walk, RAF Lakeheath, Suffolk, IP27 9RR, England, Phone +44-(0)1638-533207, E-mail: Jean1Cait1@aol.com) will take over the Ki ngdom MoAS job at next winter coronation. That means that the next report dead line, 15th of November, is exactly the last report dead line you have for me. In case you*ll notice that you forgot to write November*s report by 15th of November, please send it directly to THL Caitrin. Drachenwald today:
AARNIMETSÄ: DRAGON NEEDLE EMBROIDERY GUILD: They have taught some of the younger members of the shire of Flintheath basic embroidery stitches and the Guild mistress is also hoping to teach a class at University in Wales in November let us all hope she gets well by th at event. I am really happy to see her at the University event. ISENGAU: They have a meeting every second week where they sew new garments, learn new dances and new songs, prepare new dishes and brew liquors and mead. Fighters of the shire have been building up their metal workshop. Shire members were very happy as th ey had a change to learn calligraphy and gold leafing under guidance of Her Royal Majesty, Anna Blackleaf. Maximilian von Brandenberg held a shoe workshop. In September they will have a workshop on bags or belts. Marcellina d'Angelis, has been singing and playing a variety of musical instruments and she has also begun to create for herself dresses that match her music. Shire*s members are missing Stella Seraphina von Leuchtenberg, who has moved to the Barony of Drei Eichen. Drei Eichen has now a change t o enjoy her skills in singing and playing as well as cooking and making garments and embroidery. Shire is also planning to turn their monthly shire meetings into practical A & S workshops.
ISLES: Flintheath: Their MoAS, Samilyaa Gyrhart, has done a research 6th and 7th century Anglo-Saxons by observing an archaeology dig of an anglo-saxon and as she is also the guild mistress for the embroideries* guild she has been teaching children basic embroid ery stitches. Marguerite Dinard has made a fencing doublet, shirt, skirt, Tudor dress and underdress, and has been doing research on hats. Elizabeth Hollingworth has made a fencing doublet, shirt, pants, hat, and has been teaching sewing. The shire has also an old method of getting more memebrs to SCA. Gerilyn Fjiordon Ansbach gave birth to twin boys on July 1st and Johanna and Scarfmoore go t a girl on 20 May!!! Congratulations !!!!! Catrin O'Sullivan has made a 1580 Irish dress, hood, fencing armor, and has worked extensively in the culianary arts and Rianna Whirlwind has braided cords, made fencing armor and mid-eastern garb, and has been working on her dancing and teaching it to ot hers (belly dancing). So it is really nice to notice active shire like this one. The shire has also held a demo in May, a late period demo in June, and another demo in July where arts and sciences were displayed. Members attended events all over the Kin gdom and abroad, over the seas (I am really interested in to meet all the shire members at the Kingdom University!!!). Lough Devnaree: They have had two garb workshops in Belfast, hosted by Caradoc and Pauline and they have had two successful A&S displays. At Omagh, Lady Sagadis, Leslie, and occasional other members of the shire did a spinning demonstration which was very well received. Items on display for the public at both demos included samples of Lord Etienne's calligraphy, Sigmundr's wood, antler, and leather carving, and Lady Sagadis' textile works. Five demos and three events during the summer have meant that the shire hasn't had much chance to concentrate on A&S. The coming activities will consist of garb & armoring workshops as well as calligraphy and leatherworking workshops. The overall level of garb within the Shire is rapidly improving. They have now six equ ipped heavy fighters (three complete, three still perfecting their armour, but ready to fight). The Shire boar banner (design enlarged and modified from original by John du Barri, applique work done by Eleanora) is quite impre! ssive.
They have many personal projects of which I have here now a good list:
Lord Etienne finished two scrolls, two books, new garb, mounted mediaeval axe-head
(genuine antique) for parade display, three basket-hilts and his ongoing projects are two books, one suit of armour, two period-style folding chairs (with Sigmundr), 2 shields and one pair of thigh-length leather boots
Sigmundr Haakonsson (goup*s MoAS) finished belt-pouch for Lord Etienne to match belt and stiletto
sheath (coat of arms and vine-leaf design). He also wrote two articles for a newsletter ("Period Shoes" and "The Viking Persona, Part II: Garb") Would these articles be included in our A & s homepage???? His ongoing projects are a carved ivory scramsax hi
lt and matching belt (Viking Age gripping wolves) and a Schlaeger hilt to match the rest of Lord Etienne's set
Caradoc & Pauline have made large amounts of garb
Leslie made garb for her lord Matthew of Annan
Lady Sagadis has done spinning and knitting and a Viking brat from handspun wool.
Ciara Bui has done calligraphy and a lovely period dress with embroidered veil
Elenora has done garb as well as the above-mentioned banner for the
Cu Deraigh finished shoes and did home-brewing as well as tries to finish heavy armour.
Cernac completed Celtic garb and is still working on heavy armour.
Morgan completed heavy armour as well as a garb.
Morgan, Matt, Leslie, Cu Deraigh, John de Barri, Cernac, Aelfric, and
Ciara Bui now all have shoes and Sigurd has been accepted the sub-post as Minister of Bardic Arts.
KNIGHT*S CROSSING: Things have slowed down a little bit because quite many of the members have moved away. However, they have managed well in keeping their A & S activities ongoing. Regular dance classes happen once a month with real live musicians and be lly-dancing every Wednesday. Lady Christine is teaching armour to everybody interested and they are also going to start A & s classes on every Monday evening at their Monday meetings. The Barony won the A & S war point at the Niebelungen treasure war. Man y of the members are active with their own personal projects and their local MoAS, Lady Conny, is not the least active with her several scrolls as well as late Italian renaissance dress and armour. Here some samples of other members personal projects: Lady Christine is creating an archer helmet, 3 other sets for archers and several sets for heavy fighters! Karen has been sewing several tunics. Brian is doing a lamellar hauberk and Lord Gene is learning to make armour. Lord Gorlan is amusing others with his many songs and Lord Conan is making chain mail coifs. MEADOWMARSH: has been extremely busy in the last half year. They have hold a regular A&S meeting once a month in my home with specific topics each evening with an attendance between 15 to 30 people. They have two extra sewing evenings each month and when their real life medieval smith has time we hold armour classes and his lady gives lessons in leather craft. They have also located a pretty good medieval shoe source. Lately they have been exploring basic calligraphy and they also attend the monthly dan ce practice at the Canton of Monarch's Rest in Barony Knights Crossing. The MoAs, Lady Mairghread, and their chatelaine have presented the following classes: Courtly behavior or Etiquette 101, Textiles and Trims, Tunic construction ( people left with garb in hand), Personna Development and Name Research (We've held this one several times as our shire grows) and Feast etiquette. MINSTREL*S GUILD: Lady Ingeborg Torulfsdottir will take over the job of the guild *Minstrel*. See the Kingdom A & S Ministres* and guild contact persons* list below! POLDERSLOT: Shire has now a new MoAS, or well-known historian. Welcome on board! They have started a project to collect A & S sources of their area. Some interest has been shown towards a singing group and they have had the first gathering to put some stu ff for Open Air Museum in Eindhoven. VIELBURGEN (shire): Vielburgen has now a new MoAS, again, and as I usually say, welcome on board! Lord Allan had me a nice report. The shire has been busy with all kind of classes starting from patters for period clothing, autocrating, home brewing for be er and mead and ending to several armour workshops. They also had a small A & S competition at Celtic Sheep and Garter Raids event. In the report Allan also listed personal projects and there were many of them including his own research on German history and period style written poetry, other member's several armour projects,, John of Vielburgen's Medieval History Research and Ladies Ivana zhena Nataliia's, Rachel von Vielburgen's clothing projects as well as THL Margaret's scrolls and callography works .
