Arts and science report from Nordmark, September 2001.
This will feel a bit funny writing a report to one self. Well? I will
leave the MoAS office for the principality of Nordmark to Anna Allard. She
will take care of the things until the next principality tournament. Then
a new MoAS will be announced.

Aarnimetsä
Greetings!
The summer is at its fullest here in Unikankare even though it is
supposed
to be autumn by now. You don't hear mne complain though. Sunshine instead
of rain os OK by me.
This is now the last report you will receive from me. I am retiring from
the office knowing I will give it to capable hands as her excellency THL
Uta Bouchte takes over (probably, it has not yet been decided officially,
but she is the only candidate) the office in September. My only hope is
that I have done some good to Aarnimetsä, though I still feel I could have
done so much more. I would like to thank you for your support during my
period in the office; even though we did not meet as often as I would have
liked to, it was good to know that there was someone I could turn to in my
hour of need.
Without any further delay I give you my last report from Aarnimetsä.
Unfortunately, yet again, a short one. Hopefully my successor will do a
better job with the reports.
Your servant, ad infinitum,
Lady Zolderdody Alena
MoAS of Aarnimetsa
Hukka,
canton
As usual, the summer has been quiet (as in most of the
other places as you will see soon) in Hukka. They have held regular
meetings with little success, but are determined to get the gatherings up
and going as the autumn arrives. The MoAS of Hukka will take a short leave
to the Isles and returns before the year ends. The office will be taken
care of during this time by Lady Kerttu Roisko (whose contact information
is as follows: mka Lea Viljanen, e-mail ladybug@iki.fi ). She is more than
capable of taking over the office until William returns.
Humalasalo,
canton
No report.
Kaarnemaa,
canton
They are reviving their craft gatherings after the
summer holidays, which often enough draw people away from their homes.
They are still cooking and sewing as if ever before and the dancing and
calligraphy are getting started again. They held their annual feasting
event in August with great success as visitors came up to the north from
as far as Italy and Germany. They are also partaking in the oncoming
investiture as the autocrat of the event is from Kaarnemaa and Lady
Elisabeth the MoAS of Kaarnemaa is holding her first A&S competition in
the event.
Miehonlinna,
incipient canton
No report.
Poukka,
canton
Poukka is starting to get their act together and planning
to start a craft circle. They have already been busy making neclaces and
chains and other jewellery, singing, and needleworks and other sewing.
Unikankare,
canton
No report.
Korpi,
village
Salpakallio,
village
Not much happening there during the summer, but
apparently the MoAS of Salpakallio is planning something wicked for the
autumn. I remain in anticipation...
Savilahti,
village
Quite dead there too. The plague of the summertime!
Isles
It's that horrible time again where I have to find something to put into
my report. This not being easy since I have not received many reports
this time around.
As I wrote last time, I was going to speak with several persons about
going to a monthly report to see if that would be of any help. The
general consensus being that why when they have hard enough time writing a
quarterly report. We have (from general word of mouth) has several turn
overs in the area of MoAS. As of yet I have not received confirmed word
of who is taking over for what. As soon as I received information about
these turn overs, I will send that information onto you.
At the present time I have sent out reminders twice for this reporting
quarter with a few replies. I will include those in my reports.
Due to a long holiday in Germany this summer, I was not able to attend the
Isles meeting, but I did get a report back about the A & S
exabit/display/contest. I do believe that that message was also forwarded
onto you. I'm sure that matter has been taken care of or addressed as you
see fit.
Pont
Alarc
It has been a very creative past few months, with almost everybody busy
working on projects producing stunning results. Pont Alarch only has three
fighters to my knowledge, so the arts and sciences have become a major
part of the shire's activities and it is great to see the participation of
those who are members young and old. The great part about A&S is that it
can be done as a group or individually; plus the added bonus of not
getting bruises from people hitting you with pieces of rattan, although it
is a bit ironic that you can see more blood when sewing than you do when
fighting.
For those that do not know, our CAMP (Create and Master Piece) meetings
are on Tuesday nights at Baroness Cathryn and Lord Rees's house.
Some of our members are more active than others; this could not be truer
than with Theirry D'outremer and Petonyla Underhill.
Theirry has created a banner of his arms, made marzipan, finished his
coat-hardy and is in the process of working on a Celtic artwork scroll to
assist the backlog in Drachenwald. For Crown he is also hosting a banner
making activity where each person can paint his or her arms on a list
flag.
Petronyla has also been busy. She has made many medieval meals, including
some amazing chicken dishes and not to mention fabulous apple fritters.
She shall be our Head Cook for Crown Tourney for a good reason. Apart from
food she has also made a houplaunde for herself and daughter Kaitlin of
Pont Alarch, as well as preparing rosewater.
Baroness Cathryn of Chester has also been hard at work making a brand new
fully authentic handmade Viking outfit complete with necklace headdress
and shoes for Pennsic, which was entered into the Laurel's Prize, Tourney
at Lammas Feast and received three tokens J. For War of the Roses she
helped run an A&S display, which she also entered in (cover art work,
illumination, scroll blank, and spinning) along with Lady Madelina
(illumination) and Petronyla (lucet cording), each received a beautiful
token from her Majesty, Queen Signy.
Lady Madelina and Baroness Cathryn have created 16 small drawstring
pouches that where intended as gifts for Queen Signy's peers at Great
Court but where put to other uses as her Majesty found them very
attractive and wanted them for other purposes.
Lady Madelina Ysabella de San Antonio, apart from the War of the Roses
display, has made a Viking dress and Chirurgeonate favor which was entered
a while ago at Champion of the Isles A&S competition.
Two other people also where entered into this event, they where Morgan
Rees of Huntingdon and Lady Caitlyn of Huntingdon. Morgan fashioned a clay
mustard and salt seller, and attempted an illumination of a Saint. He won
the Children's category. Caitlyn made a clay pot and woven wicker basket;
she also helps regularly with cooking for feasts.
Avaline Ceridwyn Gwyneth has sadly left for LochacL, but before she left
she achieved many things. She would almost always make spiced nuts and
fruit rinds for our events which where splendid and bay leaf water for
washing hands up. She also helped with a lot of the research of many
period
A&S endeavors and articles, mostly information on food and nutrition.
Avaline helped a great deal with the organization and instruction of our
dancing group (Lord Samuil Glukhoi has also taught dancing). Samuil aside
from dancing is working amour related projects. Resent new member,
Eleanor, has some projects that she has been working on as well including
carving a wooden calligraphy table, and she made a 14th
century illuminated letter for the front of a card. She is working on a
beautiful silk bodice (she would have had it finished except while working
on it, the not so reliable Pont Alarch sewing machine had an identity
crises).
We have seen single achievements in A&S competitions/ displays and Laurel
prize tourneys but the shire has also achieved praise, at Warbands in
Scotland those that could attend all gave a display of dance with ten
members of the shire dancing. Do not to forget those that taught (we
where in great need of tuition) the dances who could not be there, and all
those that learned the dances but never got a chance to display them at
the Feast (although I'm not sure they where very desperate to be showing
anything).
All involved received a Royal coin from Jarl Peregrine's rein.
Our grandest undertaking at the present time is a set of thrones for use
in the Isles area as a gift for their Majesties. Lord Jonkyn the Carver is
carving (surprising?) the main portion of the thrones while Vaughn von
Vogtland is carving the kingdom arms into the leather backrest covers of
the thrones. After seeing previous works of art from both carvers, I am
assured that the two thrones shall be absolutely spectacular.
As well as personal projects the group as a whole are also extremely
active with high hopes and great ambitions for this upcoming Crown
Tourney.
Cathryn/ Petronyla/ Theirry and children (except Madelina who was in the
Americas) labored away to solidify 75 substantial sized candles for the
feast hall at Crown. Eleanor/ Cathryn/ Lord Rees of Mercia/ Theirry/
Caitlyn and Morgan all worked on the first 50 leather drawstring pouches
for the dual purpose of site tokens and part of a game. We have a lot yet
still to get done in addition to all the work we have put into Crown such
as; Table cloths and curtains that have to be stenciled, more pouches,
possibly salt sellers and candle stick holders (for the candles that we
set out of wax) made out of clay, pennants for castle decorating and flags
that Theirry is coordinating.
As a shire I believe we have achieved a huge amount of personal projects
and as an assembly from the time our shire really started business. We
have spent a lot of time and effort and you can see it in the results we
get and satisfaction in a job well done. We have a lot to get done still
just as long as we have enthusiasm, support and ambition our Shires Arts &
Sciences shall hold no boundaries.

We have combined our Fighters Practice and A&S Meetings into one due to
military scheduling. Yet, this allows us to hold an A&S as well as
Fighters practice each week instead of once a month.
We have almost completed a full set of Gothic / Munitions Armour for Lady
Felicitas, most members have either started or completed their first set
of period foot wear, we have held classes on Calligraphy, Illumination,
Court Customs and Courtesies, Several Sewing Sessions, and every other
month we hold a Movie / Social night.
This weekend, we are having a BBQ and taking basic measurements to start
construction on a 9 meter X 6 meter Pavilion to replace our old one. We
will then use these basic blue prints to construct further smaller
pavilions for our
members.
Out of our 18 active members we have around 10 participating productive
members.
We have just got 2 new members, one of which has a degree in Renaissance
history and sews professional garb. I am hoping she will take over the A&S
Office at the end of the year.
All of our members now have enough basic garb, feast gear, and other
supplies to be considered full participating SCA members. Lady Felicitas
has been of tremendous help in this department.
That is about all for now, I plan on holding classes on Drop Spindles,
Wool Shearing / Carding / and Washing, and if possible, a basic class on
wire and metal working to make clasp and broaches for cloaks and such.
Best Wishes....

It should be noted that giving the split nature of our Shire, I have
detailed the A&S status of the South Farthing of Adamastor personally, and
included my Northern deputy's report in full below.
Time period covered by the report : June 2001 to September 2001

instrumental group as well Monthly Arts and Science evening lately has
been much devoted to Gold Key garb and general crafts. The next one will
be devoted to period headgear.
A brief outline of activities in the South:
As usual, everyone settled in for the winter hiatus. This did not stop
everyone from making a great contribution to the Shire A&S competition,
held on June 2nd,in the South Farthing. The entries were :

judged most authentic/ best documented was Thomas of Ely, the most
creative was Alric of Radford, and three entrants were judged equally as
good at their craft - Lucilla Merlino, Sister Mairi Jean and Mary of
Adamastor. Thomas of Ely was counted the overall winner, and was awarded
the medallion and Queen's Prize.
Next year, the competition will be held in the North Farthing.
A lot of the South's attention has been focussed on creating craft items
for the December craft market, with generated funds to contribute to the
local Pavilion Fund (as in, we need one!), and the Kingdom Travel
Fund.

2a. Guilds covered by report : Embroidery, Armouring
2b. Groups covered by report: Tablet weaving (Card weaving), Kumihimo
(Braiding on the marudai), Cooking, Costuming, Illumination, Dancing,
Poetry
3. Time period covered by the report : May 2001 to September 2001
4. List of regular and irregular meetings
Regular Meetings:-
Armouring guild - meet once a month. This may increase in regularity due
to the number of newcomers who wish to either have armour made, or who
wish to make their own armour.
Embroidery guild - meet once a month.
Irregular Meetings:-
Dance - we are aiming to try to learn one new dance once a month.
5. A list of persons who are willing to share their knowledge, answer to
arts and sciences related questions and help other people in their
interest area.
· Lesley Ayres - Tablet weaving, Kumihimo (braiding on the marudai)
· Ilonka Wybenga - Embroidery, Historical subjects
· Russell Abery - Armouring
· Janita de Vasconcelos - Costuming, Cooking
· Mark Dreyer - Calligraphy, Leatherwork
· Ruth Dreyer - Music
· There are two newcomers to the group, one of which plays medieval
music and sings, the other which is currently studying period jewellery.
I am hoping they become regular members of the group and in time pass on
their knowledge to others.
6. List all events this quarter, including demos.
· Much energy was spent in making individual entries for the A&S
Competition which took place in June 2001. There were four entries from
the North. Lesley Ayres presented a blackwork embroidered chessboard,
Martin Ayres presented a bound book of poems he had written, Janita de
Vasconcelos presented an illuminated letter and Ilonka Wybenga presented a
blackwork embroidered sampler.
· We had a stall at the Medieval Festival which took place in July
2001. On display were several examples of blackwork, braiding, tablet
weaving and armouring. These pieces drew a good number of gentles, some
of which have shown a keen interest in joining the group.
· Collegium was held in the North on the 8th and 9th September 2001.
Classes in armouring, combat, cooking, costuming, Kumihimo, tablet
weaving, heraldry, dancing and recorder playing were offered. Many
newcomers attended at least four classes. Classes were well received, and
many a discussion continued late into the night once the classes were
finished.
7. List your branch's successes and tell why they happened. ( Solved
problems are success )
· We are slowly getting the idea across to newcomers that ultimately
they must needs be keeping themselves occupied during events, and
researching and taking up a craft of any description is the perfect way to
do this. This is very encouraging as it has the potential to increase A&S
activities.
Guild reports
CHILREN'S GUILD REPORT to the MINISTER of A&S
Greetings,
Over the past year we have made many new advances in the Children's
Guild.
We have now established a stable Boffers regulation for heavy boffers and
had designs approved for fencing boffers by the Kingdom fencing marshal as
well.
Further we are in the last stages of approval for Youth Archery
regulations and standards. We have also held two Official Archery Shoots
for our youth with great success in attendance and participation
both by the children and adults.
The establishment of a Youth Assistant Teachers status for our teenagers
has also been put into effect.
This I hope will give further responsibility to our growing youth and
allow them to start bridging the gap between Youth and Adult
responsibilities and
activities.
We have a retention average of 38 to 42 children over all in the past two
years. Presently we have 33 children registered and active in the guild.
We as always are still running in the low end for teachers and Assistant
Guild Leaders though.
Yet, more than ever, we are having children's activities planned for in
advance for individual Events through out the Kingdom. I hope to
eventually have groups posting children's activities as a regular part of
the usual DT Events postings.
I am now working on the Arts and Sciences aspects for the children. We are
starting to have regular bardic fires at the events, and during Last days
of Summer, we held a youth Arts and Sciences tourney for coloring of
period documented pictures..
Since October of 99 we have also excelled in youth participation and
attendance at events. We have went from an attendance of 1 or 2 youths per
event to an average of 15 per event. Out largest to date was 25 children
at an event last year.
At last days of summer we had 14 children attend the event while 10 of
these participated directly with the planned youth activities.
The ages of participating youth varies greatly. our youngest is 4 years
old, while our oldest is 15.
As you are aware, as of October this year I will have served as Minister
of Children for 2 years. I have now placed for the September DT
publication a notification for those interested in taking up this position
in our Kingdom.
I will do my best to help the individual who steps forward to take up this
responsibility until they have all well in hand.
Then I will do what I can where needed.
In Service to Drachenwald and the Children
Galwin..
