September 21, 2000
(Report covers the 3rd quarter)
Greetings everyone, and please note my new address and phone number as we
have successfully made the move across the English Channel.
First off I would like to thank my Regional Deputies for their
consistent and diligent work. Drachanwald is a very big Kingdom and since I
am not financially able to make all events, I rely on them to know how the
Arts and Sciences are doing within their areas.
Master Floris, (who is also my DDD) has been in the process of getting
a mailing list going for all who are interested in the arts and sciences.
There is still some fine tuning that is being made, but I have no doubt that
it will be up and running in no time. I would also like to thank Master
Floris for assisting me while I was in the States, and while my computer was
down.(They are wonderful when they work and awful when they don't)
Master Terafan who is also the University Chancellor has his work cut
out for him as Kingdom University is around the corner. It is to be held in
Naples, Italy this year , hosted by the Shire of Fire March. In his endless
pursuit of creating more period atmospheres, he has hosted competitions,
(ie..the most period encampment at Nibelungen) as well as personal ones
encouraging our most prominent Laurels to enter the competitions as well.
;-)
Lord Sigmundr Hakensson, (who is the Arts and Sciences Champion) has
out of the generosity of his heart, made and donated metal medallions for
the winners of the Arts and Sciences competition, these will become
"traveling prizes".(to be passed on from winner to winner) A medallion was
made for the categories being, "Overall", "Textiles", "Fine Arts",
"Sciences", "Culinary Arts" , "Under 14,"," Best Documentation"and
"Performing Arts"
Next years Arts and Sciences Competition will be held on April 21st,
which I am still accepting bids on. Should your local group be interested
in hosting such a wondrous event, send me a copy of your bid as well as a
copy to Their Majesties.

What follows this the small report I have for the Isles. I will endeavor to
reach these groups again with another reminder of what reporting means to
us,
the Isles, to show continued growth. As per some calls and E-mail's I
received concerning last quarter and the lack of reports was that "there
just
was not enough time to make reports because everyone was busy making
projects
to report". As I stated before, I'll just getting trying. Hopefully with
the fall and winter seasons approaching, more people will have time to put
into paper work :^) (this is a really big smile).
Caer Caledon: No report received. (Missed last 3 quarters)
Flintheath:
AWARDS
THLord Hudd de Peth received his Order of the Panache at War of the Roses.:)
PROJECTS
THLady Samilya Gyrhart Of the Isles finished an embroidered Linquist Ring
patch, started working on a 10" celtic horse embroidery, and is still
working
on the kingdom embroidery project. She also helped several people at Lammas
with embroidery questions (it was a small informal class).
THLord Hudd de Peth is still working on embroidering all the names of the
Princes and Princesses on the Princapality banner. He also helped several
people at Lammas with embroidery questions (it was a small informal class).
Sir Wolfram is still working on his chainmail.
THLady Genna an Fhroaigh took a class on finger weaving. She also has been
working on many scrolls for the Kingdom.
THLady Marguerite Dinard made a Tudor 2-piece red dress, a Tudor silver with
brown velvet dress, a parlet with silver trim, a brown velvet underdress,
and
a brown velvet under skirt.
Lord Thorgrimr Olafsson tooled and colored leather for matching scabbards
(Viking).
I seem to have misplaced the project list from July, so if you know of any
other projects--please list them. Thanks.
TRIPS
Hudd and Samilya went to the Cluny Museum in Paris and saw many fine
examples
of Medieval Illumination and Calligraphy and saw the Lady and the Unicorn
tapestries. There were many other examples of Medieval tapestries,
woodwork,
and stonework at the Museum. They also went to the V&A Museum in London and
examined Medieval embroidery.
Lady Elizabeth Hollingsworth is currently traveling with her mother touring
many Elizabethian sights and going to Elizabethian workshops/classes.
Harpelstane: No report received. (Missed last 3 quarters)
Insula Draconis: No report received.
Lough Devnaree: No report received for this quarter. Below is a report I
received late for last quarter.
Ciera Bui organized a falconry demonstration for a large event held in
Belfast on May 20. At the same event, Lady Ságadís and Nancy demonstrated
and taught the art of spinning with both drop spindles and a spinning wheel.
A full A&S display was also set up at that event, overseen chiefly by Ld. Cu
Derg, Cruibhne, Lady Ságadís, and Nancy. Ld. Sigmundr Hákonsson taught a
leather-tooling class at Caer Caledon's Beltaine event, and also showed Ld.
Etienne the basics of silversmithing.
Ld. Etienne Fevre de Dion taught a class in SCA etiquette at Caer Caledon's
Beltaine event, and taught Sigmundr how to do calligraphy and illumination.
Cruibhne has continued teaching Ld. Cu Derg how to do ceramic work and
bronze
casting.
An Equestrian workshop was held in late February.
Much armour repair has gone on to get the heavy fighters ready for Warbands.
Projects Completed:
Ciera Bui has made several items in chainmail for Shire members, including a
very nice coif displayed at the falconry event. Davin has assisted by doing
the more physically demanding work of cutting an appalling number of links
for her.
Ld. Etienne completed and presented Ld. John de Barri's AOA scroll.
Cruibhne made a number of beautiful bronze castings, some of which were made
from molds taken directly from period antiquities (a Viking Age shield-stud,
an Elizabethan sword-hanger, two Tudor rose mounts, and a Romano-Celtic
ram's-head mount). She also made an epee handle with a hilt of polished cow
bone (the bone was retrieved from one of my dogs) and a bronze quillion and
knuckle-guard of period form and considerable beauty, several Celtic and
Viking-style bronze brooches, and a bronze spearhead; Cu Derg assisted with
some of these. Cruibhne is a woman of exceptional talent and dedication; it
is to be hoped that within the foreseeable future, she will have the
facilities available to teach her skills in metalworking more widely within
the Shire.
Ld. Etienne, after minimal instruction, made a magnificent silver neck-chain
of plates with cabochon garnets and sapphires, using both forging and
fabrication techniques.
Ld. Sigmundr calligraphed (if that's a word) and illuminated a scroll for
Opus in thanks for the hospitality he and his wife have offered to our Shire
during our mass trips to Flintheath.
Lady Beatrice de Tisbury has continued her sterling work as Shire dressmaker
and garb consultant, making, among other things, a most attractive and
well-tailored fencing doublet for Cernac the Mad Venetian and a beautiful
fencing dress for herself.
Ld. Etienne made a long-sleeved overtunic for himself, a close-fitting
doublet and overgarment for Ld. Sigmundr, and is currently making a
fur-trimmed fifteenth-century greatcoat for himself.
Ld. Caradoc de Tisbury, with the able and dedicated assistance of Madeline,
cooked a very fine feast for the falconry event on May 20.
Ld. Sigmundr tooled and constructed a pouch for Master Bertrik with Master
Bertrik's coat of arms and acanthus leaves around a pelican in her piety.
The falconry event was also marked by excellent entertainment: Ságadís
performed a round of "Hey Ho/ Little Bird" with Peggy and Cruibhne; Cruibhne
and Ld. John de Barri performed a particularly beautiful harmony duet of
"Pastimes and Good Company"; Ld. Seanne and Nancy sang "The Wark o' the
Weavers"; Ld. Seanne, with the amusing assistance of Moghrun and Davin (who
acted out the details described) performed an Etienne-inspired chanting of
the rules for armour inspection, to which Ld. Etienne retaliated by singing
Kingdom law; Ld. John de Barri then demonstrated a brilliant gift for
physical comedy in the entertaining way he swept up the quantities of bread
thrown at Ld. Etienne. Sigmundr also sang twice, including a variant on the
Dead Lover theme (music Swedish traditional, lyrics by Sigmundr, harp
accompaniment).
Ld. Seanne made painted leather tokens for the heavy fighters who came over
to teach on the weekend of May 14.
New member Graeme made a magnificent late period dress for his lady Dawn
(without even requiring help from Beatrice). The Shire was most impressed.
Projects in Progress:
Etienne is working on a silver rose (inspired by the Golden Rose given as a
gift of honour by the Pope at various times in period).
Sigmundr is making Ld. Caradoc's AOA scroll.
The collection of fabric and making of yet more spectacular garb is
proceeding apace at the home of Lady Beatrice and Ld. Caradoc de Tisbury.
Ld. Cu Derg has several batches of brewing in progress.
Davin has cut out and begun a selection of knee and elbow cups for various
Shire members.
Projects that didn't quite work:
Lady Ságadís discovered that the colour of wool dye produced by new
blackberry leaves is not really very attractive.
Ld. Etienne and Ld. Sigmundr found out that fire cement won't do as a mold
material for flat-casting silver and that a large torch is needed to fully
melt an ounce of fine silver.
Pont Alarc: No report received. (Missed last quarter also)
Thamesreach: No report received.
Our friendly group in Wales: No report received. (Missed last quarter
also)

Arnulf separately forged a cloth-pin and a knife
In May Alessandra, Connie and I attended the Roman Festival in
Carnuntum: We participated in the felting exhibit and in talking with the
Lady working there we agreed to visit the pre and early history museum and
learn to spin with the drop spindle as Alex had some dog's wool to try out.
A week later Alex and I went to Aspern to the museum to learn
spinning. within half an hour had the basics down and switched to the dog's
wool (from Barsois, long haired Russian hunting dogs, runners). It is
possible to spin it although you need to twist the cord more. We both bought
spindles and wool to try around at home. I also got a set of cards for card
weaving.
We promised to be back for the Celtic festival a week later. So I
sat down a made a pre-period (ca. 450) Frisian dress after the work in the
CA #59, 1/92, Women's Garb in Northern Europe, 450-1000 C.E.: Frisians,
Angles, Franks, Baltics, Vikings, and Finns". I attended the hands on
exhibit for spinning and felting and we sampled some bread (hand ground
grain and baked in a clay oven). The museum has a big outside exhibit with
reconstructed houses where most of the action was. There was also a forge
and a Silversmith where we watched fibulas in the making. We picked up some
notes on dying wool with plants and the exhibit showed the process from the
undyed to the dyed wool including cooking on an open fire.
The next project on our list was the blacksmithing course: Marcus,
Alex Karl and I went to Hungary to try our hand at hammering iron into
something you can recognize! Three of us had a specific item in mind and
did make it Karl just made the suggested candle holder. Marcus made three
spiral-holders for his tent's center pole (he got the idea in Sweden at
Double Wars and Visby) Alex made a iron snaffle-bit which can be used with a
halter ( we only need to put in rings and a chain) I made a tripod for a pan
with handle holder fork (will be tested at Visby week by Marcus). All four
together made a spit and forks to hold it over the open fire. In between
Alex and I managed also to make some heavy cloth-pins (safety pin style and
pen annular) and two upper arm rings with spiral design (all of this is oil
blackened).
Before we where allowed to start on our own projects the teacher let
us make some basic designs: square and round points and 90° and round bends.
Then we tried to communicate our wishes with the help of a translator as
most of the people teaching only spoke Hungarian. We all had a lot of help
from the teacher but each of us managed to do part of the work alone and by
Sunday noon we had at least a very good idea how hard it is and what we are
able to do. We drove away happily and will get back down there to make
some more projects as they have also a basket weaving workshop,
cabinet/furniture making and woodworking in general (including carving)
(they even have a water operated saw on their grounds!) Several looms for
linen and wool, pearl- weaving and leatherwork as well as pottery
(blackbrand and glazed wares are possible). (There is enough space to put
at least 40 people into beds and put up 10 tents (big ones) so we will try
to secure the site and the teachers for further A&S projects maybe hands on
workshops or an event focusing on doing things.)
Irene started on a new stitched goblin chair cover.
Future: All unfinished projects from the last report will be continued and
hopefully finished before the end of the year.
See below for the most extensive site on Documentation I could find on the
net in English. I have their permission to translate and use their material
with proper citation and will do so. In the meantime we can probably put a
link to their site in Drachenwald's A&S page. It is from the Atlantian A&S
page (http://moas.atlantia.sca.org) and their handbook has a section
specifically on documentation
(http://moas.atlantia.sca.org/handbook/ch3.htm#Docu).
Blauwasser
Summer has been slow as most of our members were off on vacation at one time
or another. However, Todd has completed his leg and body armour, mostly
from leather. He made cuir-boillied vanbraces and greaves. He constructed
a shield. Terafan sewed a heraldic pennon, brewed beer and mead, painted
two tapestries, and conducted a photo-taking trip to England, Scotland, and
Italy so he can make some reproductions. Claudia has been working on
scrolls and recipes, while Daniela and Kraepfchen have also been working on
scrolls. John Mead made a tunic and pants, and his wife sewed her first
dress.
Future: We have a masqued ball scheduled for the end of October (at a shire
meeting/party) to use the dances we have been learning.
Celanna
There has not been much change since the last report. we are still working
on the shire map, and hope to get it done sometime before the world ends...
We are all planning for the event in September, and I will be having some
garb workshops beforehand. I am also hoping that some of the classes to be
taught at the event will spur some new arts and science activity in the
shire. Because it is summer, most of the shire is elsewhere so not much has
been done. I personally have been attending many of the Byzantine museum
exhibits (now that I have my free card!) and plan on learning/teaching some
Coptic arts and sciences.
Drachensheim
We've had weekly A&S meetings, one of which had an excellent class on
brewing by Michael of Kennsdale.
As for the A&S projects completed in our fair lands, they are as follows:
- Michael of Kennsdale-completed his first tunic, made an excellent batch of
mead
- Hans the Peasant-working on a pattern for plastic knee armor, and is
currently working on a leather belt with Viking motifs
- Ambur of the Black Pool-completed carved leather belt with Celtic knot and
Norse runes, made a set of replica Viking mosaic beads, working on fur
cloak.
- Gail-finished first dress
- Brian-working on tunic
Infimus Mons Aureus
The major activity has been armour work and some garb making. We took a
trip to Venice to see some of the weapons and cool items in the Doge's
Palace. We are researching easy feast items in preparation for the
September GaWCC in Infimus. Modern life is causing Kathleen to step down
as Infimus's A&S officer.
Isengau
Isengau members have been busy working on encampment items. They plan to
enter Terafan's encampment competition at Niebelungen. They have made a
fire pit grill, and a tripod with hooks for hanging items. Marcellina has
done more research into medieval German songs. Maximilian has been working
on shoes and armour. He also made portable holes for himself and Master
Terafan.
Shire of Meadowmarsh
4. Activities in the group - Armour workshops on weekends; Developing garb
and personas to go with and vice versa; Practice feast for Crown tourney
(planning and preparation during July); Design meetings at A & S meetings
for Crown Tourney - Hall, Chapel, and Tourney Field; Our shire gives many,
many school demos where historical research is necessary
Meetings
We have regularly scheduled A & S meetings in my home where I have
an extensive library of sources of medieval history, costume design, and
fabrics etc.
Fighter practices are weekly - at the same time the ladies hold a sewing
circle. There are also regularly scheduled dance practices. We've begun to
hold auxiliary meetings as we start our Crown Tourney projects.
Coming projects
We are creating period stenciled fabric for a baldequin. Getting
the shire kitted out in period shoes and hats. Developing and building
period tables and thrones. A conscious effort to have everyone working on a
name and device. (good progress here with 10 new submissions. A class on
serving. A class on Royalty and respecting the "presence".
Individual Projects- We always have fighters working on armour; Leather
crafter making quiver; We have a brewer in the shire; Stewardship at a
feast; Some of our ladies are working particularly on court garb
A & S recognition
As always Lord Aelric of Battle is working hard with development of
period furniture.
Aurelia von Falkenstein has been working extremely hard at creating
a period feast.
Polderslot
Highlight of the quarter was the Market at Polderslaughter I think, which
inspired many people to make things: Lady Morwenna, who organised it also
made garb for it, her lord Dugald made many pewter accessories, as did
Egon; Egon's lady Lidewij had made a collection of earthenware. Deredere
made costume, and Tuomas sold homemade herb syrups. The encampment at the
event looked remarkably good, especially in torchlight, and Lady Laura and
I cooked a feast using thirteenth century recipes, which kept surprising us
by being better to eat and less strange than they seemed. About a week
before Polderslaughter, Dugald and Lady Morwenna got married in medieval
style, and many were inspired to make new clothes for the occasion. The
music and singing group performed during the day.
More or less regular meetings are: biweekly dancing/fencing, singing (both
choral and single melody stuff (bit of a vocabulary challenge this, hope I
got it right), bimonthly A&S night (bring your own project), dance music
(instrumental), meets at the whim of the three to five members of the group.
All of these are going on as usual, although things are a bit quiet between
July and September, most regular meetings have a Summer stop. We did have a
couple of singing gatherings, and will be meeting every second Monday of the
month starting September.
Coming A&S events in the next quarter: Seems like there will be a regular
fighter practice on alternating Wednesdays with the Dancing/fencing starting
this Fall. Me and Morwenna (at whose apartment the practice will be) are
thinking to have a "stitch and bitch" for non-fighters who want to come
along.
I'm looking at organising a shoemaking workshop that promises you at least
one pair of finished shoes in a weekend, and hoping to move along the wall
hanging project...
Projects of the populace: No guarantees this is complete; I am sending the
report to our newsletter though, so hopefully those who think they should be
mentioned will get back to me. Several people are slowly moving towards
having their own armor and starting to fight. Gilliam has much experience in
making armor for his reenactment group, and has had people over to work on
things together a few times, and makes things for others. Deredere is
working on handouts on 16th century Flemish peasant dress, and may be
tempted to present them in a workshop if people are interested. Claudwick
has made a lovely scale model pavilion, and may make a full sized one later
on. Janneke made a second psaltery, and is now looking at making a wooden
chest.
Rauchenderburg
Much activity in the armoring arena. Many people made armour.
Inter-personal issues in the shire resulted in Colleen ni Glas resigning as
shire A&S officer.
Schwarzloch
A&S activity in the group during the quarter: primary activities center
around armour making (this is a new group) other activities are unreported
to the MOAS.
No regular and A&S meetings during the quarter. There are no currently
reported projects of the populace, but folks prepared items for the Little
Sea Naval Battle.
Vielburgen
We have a new A&S officer. Lady Raharin Sutherland (Suzanne Mood), who
took the office from Heidi Springfield.
The first Wednesday of every month holds our Business Meetings and our last
Wednesday holds our dance practice. We are holding our A & S nights here at
my home on the 2nd and 3rd Wednesdays.
Since the beginning of our new year many different things have been taught
during our A & S. Such as: Macramé, Quilting, Dance, Autocrating, Knitting,
Games, Working on making weapons, Working together for events, Heraldry, and
Sewing. This is a compiled list from Heidi Springfield's notes. Countess
Eleonora has taught others on how to make Cotehardies, chemises of different
types, banners and a fighting surcoat. And helped research garb. Many
people here have helped both my husband and myself with Society and mundane
matters.
In our future classes that will be taught in my home are; spinning, loom
work, dance, needle weaving and embroidery. Also the high and low points of
both heavy and light fighting. (so all will understand, hopefully!) I am
planning ahead and hoping to get some of the simple basics brought back out
since we are acquiring new members weekly.
(Forming) Shire of Wildenburg:
All is quiet. We have not yet had much A&S activity as we are still getting
organized.

Aarnimetsa
Quarterly Report for September 2000
Barony of Aarnimetsa
Lady Zolderdody Alena
Minister of Arts and Sciences of Aarnimetsa.
Here it is - at last. Short and sweet.
Kaarnemaa, Canton
They've been terribly busy, as usual, having had at least one big event and
a couple of smaller ones. They've also had a riding excursion with a
medieval twist of which I would be very jealous were I not allergic to
horses. For their main event of the summer, the harvest feast, they went to
great lengths to make it a success, preparing delicious foods and even
costumes for the beginners amongst us. All through the summer they have
kept the craft amd dancing circles going with many and varied handicrafts.
Hukka, Canton
The Canton of Hukka has been rather quiet for the past year or so, but they
now have a new moas, William of casteleyn (mka Ville Marttila, email:
vmarttil@cc.helsinki.fi) who seems eager to bring back the old glory of
Kukka. They've had regular meetings every other Tuesday doing handcrafts
and watching "medieval" movies. Many other and varied activities are also
planned. All together the new MoAS of Hukka seems to be a real treasure.
Unikankare, Canton
Even though the summer has been quiet in this canton, the activities are
all starting up again with dancing, handicrafts, a music circle, cooking,
armouring and all sorts of fighting.
Poukka, Canton
(no report) I'm getting worried. I've decided to take up this matter with
the senechal of Poukka, so hopefully there will be a report next time.
Humalasalo, Canton
(no report)
Savilahti, village
They have a new MoAS who I met at our tent camp, Eir (mka Mirella Kanerva,
email:mirellamk@hotmail.com) She seems very capable and interested in the
job. Since they're just starting up as a new village they don't have much
happening during the summer but I'm sure there will be a change as time
goes by.
Torna, village
These people are doing so much armouring it's simply amazing! They're doing
everything from blade hilts to gambesons and from what I hear, very well
and quickly too! They're also planning on doing clothes, calligraphy and
leatherwork!
Barony note:
We had our own tent camp by a beautiful lake in the beginning of July. Even
though the event itself ended up rather small, we had all the more fun -
mostly in the lake. Since we had very few participants the A&S courses were
held on a very personal basis i.e. one-to-one. the A&S competition proved
to be quite funny: we had nice handcrafts, all worth a prize but also a
presentation of the Burning of Visby provided to us by our friends from
Nordmark with the assistance of our Baron. The buring of the sand
castle/town in the still summer night was definetly worth a prize.
