Thus begins the 2nd Quarter report from the offices of the Arts and Sciences

On February 23-25 the Shire of Insula Draconis sponsored "Champions of the Isles". Listed below are the Arts and Sciences winners.

Fine Arts - Lady Cribhna na Tallaimh (For her Bronze Cross)
Culinary Arts - Lady Cribhna na Tallaimh (For her Irish journey bread)
Textile Arts - Katherine of Thamesreach (For her 16th Century Ropa)
Sciences- Sir Arafel Christian (For his shoes)
Childrens- Morgan (For his Lutterel palster illumination) Documentation- Katherine of Thames reach (For her Ropa)
Performing Arts- Mistress Caitlin de Courcy (For her Welsh harp piece)

The Arts and Sciences Champion of the Isles (which was no surprise was Katherine of Thames reach )

The Annual Arts and Sciences Championships was held in Uppsala, Sweden and took place on April 20th-22. , A formalized "mini-university" took place so more of a class structure took place during the day for the general populace during the competition. A Scriptorium was also held during the day. A Laurel-level competition was held simultaneity with the regular Kingdom Competition. The Laurel Level competition was opened to all who wish to enter, (Laurel and Non-Laurel alike)

There were 35 entries in the Kingdom competition. The quality presented was outstanding and seeing such new and challenging works was breathtaking. The divisional winners are as follows:

Fine Arts- Gabrielle de Noyers (For her scroll)
Culinary Arts- Lady Petronilla of London (For her sausages)
Textile Arts- Lady Cecilia Erihdotter (for her blackwork shirt)
Sciences- Kerttu Roisko (Paint work on scribes box)
Documentation- Ulfr Keitilson (Research paper on food)
Performing Arts- Trio in Galone (Dancing)
Newcomers- Gabrirlle de Noyers (For her scroll)
Sadly, There were no "Under 14" entries this year

The Overall Winner and Kingdom Champion went to Lady Cecilia Erihdotter with a total points of 97.3 ( out a possible 100)

Lady Cecilia by the way was elevated on Saturday evening as our newest Drachenwald Laurel.

There was also another competition being held which was the "Laurel Level" competition. There were 9 exceptional entries, all worthy of winning this competition, it was very difficult for the judges, considering the level presented.

The Entrants were:
Mistress Oriane (For her scroll) Mistress Oriane (For her handmade rabbit parchment)
Master Terafan (For his 13 Century wooden carved box)
Mistress Celemon & Jon Hoole (For their dance)
Master Arenwald and Ly Signe (For their dance)
Ly Karena the Dancer (For her scroll)
Gabrielle de Noyers (For her scroll)
Ld Sigmundr (For his lime wood carving)
Mistress Oriane (For the enameled collar, which also became the traveling prize for this competition.
Ld Sigmundr had the honor of winning this competition with his Lime wood carving.

The Patron of the Arts goes to The Principality of Nordmark, and after seeing the items presented, it was easy to recognize why.

Although some gentles were recognized more than others, it was plain to see how Drachenwald's Arts and Sciences shinned and that the quality shown throughout our Kingdom is something to be proud of.

I had a well versed panel of judges, and to them I am extremely grateful. In addition to their hard work, the Scriptorium provided the scrolls for the winners of each division, they were a work of art as well. I have received an application for The Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild from Lady Helena.(mundanely know as Ilonka Wybenga, who lives in South Africa) and can be reached at: Iwybenga@Tsi.org.za Unfortunately THL Samilya was not able to continue on as their projected move to Germany did not happen. I have no doubts that Lady Helena will do a wonderful job and maintaining the high standards set before her.

The Children's Guild continues to grow and thrive under the watchful eye of Baron Galwin. The Principality of Nordmark is also reporting activity within their guilds, which is wonderful to see the knowledge being spread throughout our fair lands.

Bards Night

Bards' Night IV: We managed to hold a Bards' Night! The Event was hosted by the incipient Shire of Mynydd Gwyn in Birmingham, 11th to 13th of May. Although it was a rather small event, we had great weather, great music, and a lot of fun. Master Otto held a class on medieval instruments and brought an astounding selection of those.)Mistress Caitlin held a dancing class, and Lady Valeria and milord Maredudd taught us a few madrigals. We never once needed to activate the Bard in the Box ;-).

Due to the low attendance, we did not hold any competition or the like.

For me it was a great experience, seeing how differently things look and feel (and sound!) in other parts of Drachenwald. Everyone was wonderful!

And, for even more good news, Lady Valeria delle Stelle made Minstrel. She told a Greek folktale (in which everyone died, which is, as she assured us, the way of Greek folktales) and another tale she had written in the same style where no-one died ;-). She played the recorder and a stringed instrument I can not name (it was played like a guitar, but had an open tuning), and as her minstrel's test she sang a song she'd written herself on a poem by Shakespeare. Master Otto and his Lady kindly helped me judge her performance, for which I'm very grateful.

Milord Maredudd ap Gwylim formally joined the guild and made Novice at the event.

Recent changes: see above

Activities: No regular guild activities. Too many kilometers between the members.

Web Page: Works again, gets a decent number of hits ;-) Shea O'Shaughnessy of the Shire of Vielburgen kindly set up a Mailing List for the Guild and anyone interested in Bardic, but so far I haven't gotten it running. With me back from holiday and feeling far more energetic now, I hope to have it active soon.

Now, onto Drachenwald today:

ISLES REPORT

It was come to past that I have not received any reports for this quarter from any of the Shires/Incipient Shires or other groups of interest of the Isles. The only report I have to send is one that I received late from last quarter. Quarterly reminders were send out in April and again reminders were send out this month.

As I write this, I try to think of what I can do to make reporting understood for it's important to the Isles. I can only think that the best alternative is to go to monthly reporting. At least this way we may get some information from the Shires as to the activities that are going on. I'm sure that if we cannot get quarterly reports, we will not have luck getting monthly reports, but it might stir some emotions up in the officers, either good or bad. I will pass this report onto the Isles Seneschal to get his thoughts on the matter.

In Service,
HL Marguerite Dinard
Minister of A & S of the Isles

Incipient shire of Mynydd Gwyn
This post is being held by:
Lady Valeria delle Stelle di Fiorenza
(Leda Filippopoulou)
32 Hirwain St, Cathays
Cardiff, CF24 4JH, Wales, UK

--Lord Meredydd made a padded gambeson and a heavy leather neck guard for heavy fighting.

--The cooking guild continues its meetings every other week. We are trying to do new recipes every time. Also Lady Blodeuwedd was the co-ordinator and head cook for the wonderful Feast at Champion of The Isles. My contribution was two plates of Hais, a medieval arabian sweet.

--I am proud to announce that we are definitely hosting Bards' Night IV on May 11-13 in Birmingham.

Pont Alarch

At our shire meeting yesterday, Lady Madelina Isabella de San Antonio was voted in unanimously for Arts & Science Minister for Pont Alarch. There were no other applicants for this position. Actually they thought she'd make a great A & S officer. Her contact details are:

Elizabeth Berdanier

It is nice to see the Shire of Pont Alarch growing once again and having Lady Madelina as the new A&S minster will surely be an asset to them. I look forward to working with her in the future.

Barony of Aarnimetsä

Thus, with no further ado, the report from the barony of Aarnimetsä for 15.2. - 15.5. 2001:

Hucca, canton: no report.
Humalasalo, canton: no report.
Kaarnemaa, canton: no report.

Miehonlinna, canton: no report. (I was sadly informed only yesterday that the brand new canton has a new MoAS. I send him e-mail, but he probably simply had no time to make anything up on such short notice. I know the new MoAS personally and can assure you he is amazing. There seems to be no boundaries to this man. He works with wood, metal, and cloth. He has been provinding wooden cups for Aarnimetsä at an incredible rate. His interests also lie in music and musical instruments, which he also makes. Unfortunately though, he is very shy. But still I'm happy to have him onboard. A.)

Poukka, canton: They have kept busy with their choir group and it has surely proven worthy the trouble. We had the pleasure of hearing the group in our lates event and the singing was as close to perfect as I could imagine. Also patterns for clothes has been drawn and table weawing practised. The MoAS of Poukka is giving up her job, but the new MoAS will be just as qualified as the previous one. The next report will probably be from her.

Unikankare, canton: Regular meeting continue with dancing, crafts, and music. Unfortunately since Unikankare is a student canton, all of these will ceese during the summer holidays (you would not believe it! This town is like a ghost town once the summer starts! A.). At the crafts meeting they havve made scrolls and studied heraldry.

Salpakallio, village: Nothing much happening. The MoAS of Salpakallion has been teaching privately some scroll working (she is also the signet clerc of Aarnimetsä) and also clothing. Otherwise things have been quiet.

Savilahti, village: They've had a meeting with clothing and patterns. They've also started on serious armouring as they are making helmets for the willing new fighters of the village. Eir is also giving up her job as a MoAS of Savilahti soon as she is hoping to move to Unikankare. More news on that later on...

Yep. That was that. Unfortunately. I've had some private project for the common good of Aarnimetsä, though. I've translated most of the information of A&S competitions you posted on the web. There had been so many questions here on how to enter a competition, and especially on what kind of documentation should they make. This was especially after the A&S faire, where, though I thought Aarnimetsäns did really well, documentation was not their strongest side. So I made some instructions on that to be published in our newsletter. Hopefully it will be some use to people here. I have also been planning on the A&S competition for the oncoming investiture here and have some ideas. My plans are to make two separate competitions: one normal, and the other anachronic. That is, anything that would not have been used in the Middle Ages, but is perfectly acceptable in the SCA, things like "period" cellular phone cases.

As you know, I will be leaving my office at the investiture in September. I still have no follower for my place though there are people interested. These people are one Katarina af Ingata and THL Uta Boucht. Uta you probably know yourself, so no more about that. Ingata though she means well is not yet, I'm afraid, at the level of handling a baronial MoAS office. Thus I will support Uta with my vote. The decicion (I hope) will be made in July, so I'll be able to write to you about it in my next report.

Lady Zölderdödy Alena
Minister of Arts and Sciences of Aarnimetsä

Principality of Nordmark:

I haven't got the contact information to the guilds in Nordmark. They will be added as soon as I get the information.

I will also step down from my office as a MoAS for Nordmark. This will be announce in silversparren soon. I have been MoAS for Nordmark for almost four years now. So I think it's time to let someone else have a try.

Barenau
Vitus, Katharina, and Frank are making 8 site signs in the form of miniature
curved heater shields in heraldic colours with movable pointing arrows.

Blauwasser
The shire of Blauwasser had three members attend Feast of Fools. Three
members have worked on armor, and new tunics. Several shire members
completed new garb and new shoes for the medieval market season.

Drachensheim
We have been very busy here in Drachensheim. Our shire hosted Engines of
War which was greatly enjoyed by all who attended. We have also continued
our weekly A&S meetings. We built a trebechet for our event (ok it was
mostly Michael, Hans, Jelena, and Carl) that has about 150 meter range! We
had a siege engine competition at Engines of War (go figure!). Meadow Marsh
brought a trebechet and won the competition! Vivat!

As for individual projects, they are as follows: Sue- made a batch of
delicious blackberry wine (from an old family recipe); Ld Michael of
Kennsdale- started a batch of mead and a batch of blackberry wine using
Sue's recipe; Hans the Peasant- finished one carved leather jak and has
another in progress; Alvilda in foegr- made the feast for the event, 2
bodices, 1 pair of brais, 1 carved leather pouch, 1 linen underdress, 1
carved leather belt, and 1 more carved leather pouch in progress.

Drei Eichen
There is currently very little A&S activity in the barony. Nothing to
report.

Frieden des Drachen.
This is the first A&S report from the shire as we are only just shy of a
month old. This group is well garbed and has been working on individual A&S
projects for at least a year and in many cases longer.
The areas that are being seriously explored are: quilting, embroidery,
knitting, chain mail, the brewing of mead and beer, armoring, leather work,
caligraphy and illumination, cooking, and heraldry.
The other section of the shire members are the newbies from Kitzingen
whose priority is to make enough garb to get through Horseradish Wars. At
the present time, I have made a tunic for each of them to get them started
but have told them that they are responsible for being at my house next
Saturday to sew the other pieces. So far, the response has been positive as
to them attending. Fabric is being purchased by them and many of them have
patterns that they have purchased or sketched out.
My perosnal goal for the shire A&S area is to (A) get all memebrs
clothed, and then (B) get them interested in areas of the SCA other than
fighting. I do not forsee many problems there as the group is a very open
minded and creative bunch.

Isengau
Isengau has done very little. Two members are focusing on their upcoming
wedding and others are busy preparing wedding gifts. Garb has been made.
Furniture has been made. Armor has been worked on.

Upcoming projects are more armor, furniture, and a pavilion.

Barony of Knights Crossing
Knights Crossing has been having classes on a regular basis. The three most
recent were Court Heraldry, Calligraphy, and Medieval Hats. Several members
have been working on armour in preparation for the summer season. One
member entered calligraphy in Kingdom A&S.

Meadowmarsh
Group Activities: Developing garb and personas to go with and vice versa and
period cooking. Our herald has been working overtime with individuals
developing devices

We have regularly scheduled A & S meetings in my home where I have an
extensive library of sources of medieval history, costume design, and
fabrics etc. We pick a specific topic for the general A&S meeting lately
we've been working on persona development and hats/shoes.

Coming projects - We will continue to focus on hats and shoes. There will
also be a class on etiquette and deportment. Again we have many new members
who are looking at basic garb and persona development. We will be exploring
Comedia del Arte pieces to perform at a Madrigal Feast we are preparing as
an event in late fall.

Individual Projects: We always have fighters working on armour. Shoe
and hat making is in the works at the moment . See #8 below for more
details

A & S recognition
There were 19 A&S projects presented for judging at our Shire A&S
Exhibition. Mistress Hanna and Master Floris acted as judges, graced our
high table at feast, and presented classes on head coverings and tin
casting. They left us abuzz with ideas for more projects. A&S judging
forms (new on the Drachenwald website) were used to give the populace
experience in competition format and formal documentation.. Highest scorers
were Lord Aelric of Battle with a beautiful wood carved chest and Lady
Mairghread ni Fhlaithbheartaigh with a Creme Boyled (Bread Custard).

Polderslot
Dancing and fencing are both on track again; Lady Laura is the new
dancemistress, and is working on doing new dances. Singing goes on as usual

Activities in the last months: We had a good time making masks at the
Christmas event and doing a masked ball in the evening.

We had two shoe workshops in February, taught by Merlin from Belgium. Twenty
people participated, making a pair of medieval style shoes in a weekend,
allthough not by entirely medieval techniques. All had fun, most have
finished their shoes by now.

Right now we are very busy preparing for Coronation and the tourney before.
We've painted wooden shields, made lots of little flags and a few large
penants, fake holes and are working on four large wallhangings of pictures
from the Maciewoski Bible, painted on cotton. Beltane was cancelled due to
foot and mouth, and turned into a prep workshop.

Individual projects (random and no doubt incomplete selection): Boudewijn is
carving wooden boxes with different designs; Deredere finished a complete
late period outfit for Bertrik, including a top hat; Floris taught etching
and pewter casting at DW (helped by Simeon); Hannah went on a fiddle playing
class, learning to play estampies and improvise.

Vielburgen

Rachel Shady: has completed two kimonos and a pair of hakamas and decorated
some large rice bowls with her art work.

Shirl Hayes: made oragami animals for our event, Valentines
and completed an irish dress with help and instructions from me.

Carry Rich: has made 4 bodices, 3 skirts and 3 chemises in irish style.
She has donated time and money to these for others.

Robert Ekstroem: has been dilligently working on chain mail and taught a
class this June with Tony.

April Farren: A glorius hug and kiss to her has been there to help out many
of our new people with providing her home. She has set up the Vielburgen web
site! ANd working hard core with me on getting our advertising paperwork in
a better order. She is also working on an Italian Renn dress.

Jennifer: has been working on a nice Irish Dress, adding beadwork and
embroidery. She is also working on her armor.

In the past 2 months, there have been numerous dresses made and passed on to
their owners. I am still taking time to work on Pam's panel, taking time off
sometimes. I got to sit down and make a simple norman dress with peasant
embroidery along the front of it! Hopefully it will be done soon. We have
had a wonderful selection of new people join and dive right in!

Celanna
Very little activity in the last quarter. I've been sewing *alot*, am
currently working on handsewing, tablet weaving and embroidering early
templar, 10th(?) century viking (hedeby), 6th c. coptic, 14th century
english, and chinese ming dynasty garb, most of which also include hats and
shoes. I'm also working on making an a&s website of things the shire and i
have made, as well as a bit of singing. Alexios has been illuminating and
calligraphing as usual, as well as lots and lots of music, has started
playing with Marina (who plays flute). He's also making his own garb. Julian
has been taking byzantine chant lessons and has started learning how to bake
bread. Takis is doing leatherworking and metal working and has made a signet
ring for the george who is in the army, and will make another for
Franchesca.
