Greetings to One and All! It is hard to believe that the second quarter is
now upon us, Where does time go? It has been an incredible quarter, there
has been so much activity at events as well as locally. I am very impressed
at the skills and knowledge that is ever present and it certainly showed at
the Kingdom Arts and Sciences competition which was held in the Shire of
Drachensheim, (Bittburg Germany) on April 14-16th. Not only was there an
outstanding panel of judges, but the competitors came out in force to enter
their pieces.
There was a grand total of 30 entries and all categories were well
represented. The judges had a very hard time and spent the entire day going
through the entries with a fine tooth comb. There was an excellent panel of
judges with whom I am extremely grateful of having. They consist of in no
particular order, (after her Majesty of course ) ;-) HRM Alessandra
Melusine, Sir Geoffry, Master Wiglaf, Mistress Eleanora, Master Bertrik,
Mistress Oriane, THL Genna, Master Floris, Mistress Hannah, Mistress Kira,
Master Paul and Ld Sigmundr.
It is with great pride that this years Arts and Sciences winners be
announced. :-)
The "under 14" category was won by Anna Fernald with her PCS scroll
The "Textiles" category was won by Lady Sagadis Duncansdottir with the
child's sweater that she hand knitted. (even raised the sheep!)
The "Sciences" category was won by Ld Sigmundr Hakensson with the ivory
handle he carved for his knife.
The "Fine Arts" category was won by Lady Katrina the Dancer with her
beautifully illuminated scroll.
The "Culinary Arts" category was won by Lady Seraphina Von Leuchenberg who
made incredible eggs.
The "Performing Arts" category was won by Ld Etienne, who captivated us all
with his song on "Kingdom Law" (I have never heard it in that format before,
if you haven't either than perhaps you should ask him to sing for you) :-)
The "Best Documentation" went to Lady Katarina Von Woinovich who did an
extremely thorough amount of documentation on violet syrup.
And the "Overall" winner was Lord Sigmundr Hakensson. He certainly
displayed carving to it's finest, his ornate designs along with precise
cutting had certainly captivated the judges.
An MoAS meeting took place and although several topics were brought up, one
that is forthcoming is a mailing list for all of those who are interested
with the arts and sciences. Master Floris has graciously accepted to
maintain this list, I have no doubt that he will have it up and running in
no time. :-) The idea of having a mid level award was brought up, but there
were a lot of mixed feelings, I am still asking for opinions on this from
the populace before it is to go further, or dropped.
The "Patron of the Arts" goes to the Isles this year. Congratulations on a
job well done! They took home a grand total of 5 wins, you have certainly set
the standards for us all to aspire to.
aspire to.
Master Terafan had compiled a new judging form, which was desirable
considering there was a lot of room for personal comments. I would like to
see the Kingdom strive closer to Authentcity and work on Creativity once that
has been accomplished. It is wonderful seeing creativity flowing, but as a
rule, creativity will have to come afterwards for a more accurate piece. I
am also grateful to Master Terafan as he was quite thorough is creating the
criteria sheets. This was a wonderful aid for the judges so they could
better view the entrees. We are still fine tuning here, but with the input
of others it will become an outstanding forum in
which to guide us.
On a separate note, I will be moving to Vielburgen (Germany) in July and will
be out of touch until we come back from vacation as well as receiving our
household goods... I have posted our new address and pertinent information,
but it doesn't become official until July 14th . If you have a pressing need,
please do not hesitate to contact my DDD who is Master Floris
and he can be reached at: floris@blancefloer.demon.nl

Will, it's that time again, yes the quarterly A & S report. I am planning to
hold a regional MoAS meeting at War of the Roses in July if I'm in country.
At this time there is a chance I will have to travel back to the States, but
I'll still plan on having the meeting unless I post otherwise. As I have
not heard or seen from all the local folks recently, I do hope to see them at
this event.
The Isles was well represented at Kingdom Arts and Sciences held in Germany.
From Flintheath there was THLady Samilya Gyrhart of the Isles with embroidery
and a poem and THLord Hudd de Peth with wax tables and embroidery. From
Lough Devnaree were Ld Sigmundr Hakonsson with his carvings, Ly Sauadis
Ducans daughter with her woven work and Ld Etienne Fevre De Dion for his
original (song for lacking a better description) piece on Curia. Ld Sigmundr
hakonsson won overall.
Here goes the local reports.

ID actually does something useful Kingdom wise; we sponsor a university.!!
Seriously though
things went pretty well. The only thing I wasn't too pleased with was the
feast. Yes, it was me
cooking! Problems were due to the two cookers turning out to be two half
cookers. Quick
chopping and changing saved the day
but meant things didn't come out as well as I'd hoped. Such is life.
Melusine (Julie Tottie), Emma (Karen Stocker) and I are still dancing. Not
quite SCA but
never mind. Off to the Templars Fair this weekend; apparently we are dancing
in front of the
beer tent!
I did some dance teaching over in Finland - good lot of dancers over there.
Sent them some
16C Italian stuff; will be interesting to see what happens.
Sent some dance music over to Wales as well. Apparently they are trying to
get a three part
band together. Might hear the results at Midsummer.
Lyris of Clee (Heather Philips) has been making legs (as in steel armoured
ones...) and a
bunch from Thames reach came over to my place the other day and bashed things
(results set
of legs & set of arms but not on the same person.).
Ormswyn (Steve Tanner) has been making little shields for scoring our tourney
Melusine and I made it the A&S contest. Did a bit of judging.
I'm still working on Talhoffer (15C fight manual) slowly ... and that's about
it!!
Pont Alarc
We're averaging 2 A&S meetings a month, varying attendance. I've been trying
to get people
to get me a back list of items they've been working on, but due to some
procrastination ;~) I'll
have to get back to you on that stuff.
To date, known items made...(These are only the ones I'm one hundred percent
sure of ;~)

In this report I have not only the (unfortunately few) reports from my
officers (it is in a way, understandable, since the busiest season in the
universities has started, and most of my officers are university students, I
know I almost forgot it ...), but also the report from the arts and science
event we had here in Aarnimetsa. So here it is, not a day late: the MoAS
report from Aarnimetsa for 15.2.2000-15.5.2000.
(I won't be writing down the villages that have _not_ reported, only the
cantons)
Hucca, canton: No report. I know that they have a new MoAS who probably
simply forgot. He might send the report a bit late and in that case I'll put
it in with my next report in August.
Humasalo, canton: They've been busy as usual. Continuing with the shoes,
they've also found time for cooking, movies, boardweaving and making
ribbons. some embroidery stiches have also been introduced to the canton.
Kaarnemaa, canton: These people are amazing! I simply do not understand how
on earth do they have time for all that they do. In early march they had a
dance course led by lady Isabella d'Hiver, and a field trip to the local
theatre to see Romeo and Juliet. They've also had time to watch some videos
accompanied with period snacks. In April they had a gentleman's cooking
evening where the ladies got to do nothing but eat (I kind of like the sound
of that especially after reading all the things they've cooked). Other
activities in the canton have been crafts circles (including classes in
celtic knots, board weaving, embroidery and dressmaking), dance practices
and calligraphy producing readymade scrolls. As plans for the summer they
have a herb excursion in the bush and dyeing with natural dyes.
Poukka, canton: No report. But I know they're not dead. They also have a new
MoAS who probably simply forgot. I'll try and be more persistant next time.
Unikankare, canton: Unikankare has a new MoAS, a capable young lady named
Sunniva Haraldsdatter. She took over in April from Dafydd Myfyrgar, so her
report is from that month onwards. Weekly meeting are as follows: dance on
Mondays, Crafts on Thursdays, and more dance, this time in the famous Turku
Castle every third Saturday of the month. They also practice fencing,
fighting, and there are armourless fighter practices for beginners. So far
they've learned how to make scrolls and are having lessons in SCA hierarchy
(different awards, what they are, how and who should get one- for
beginners). They are also planning to take part in a local Medieval market
to sell handicrafts.
Walkiala & Hiidenkyla, villages (merge in progress): They have a new MoAS
also, and she was so enthusiastic about her job that she sent her report a
month early. No objections there :) They are doing dance, crafts (embroidery
and history), and some theoretical cooking and are continuing in the same
direction.
Korpi, village: They are looking for a new MoAS at the moment, so the report
I recieved from the former MoAS was very brief. They are doing some dancing
and some crafts and are trying to revive the cooking circle. I expect to
recieve the next report from their new MoAS.
Salpakallio, village: Report recieved, nothing much seems to be happening.
They are hoping to organise various activities for the summer. Hopefully
there will be something else in the next report.
Torna, village: This village has been busy doing armour the whole time, and
it is getting somewhere by now. They had some good teachers (THL Edmund of
Oakcastle, Lord Godwin Olafsson) and it seems almost all in need have now a
heavy fighting helmet. Other artifacts done in Torna include, for example,
gambesons.
Other villages have not yet reported. If I recieve reports later on I'll
include them in my next report. And now on to the event.
As said, we had an Arts and Science event here in the beginning of may
together with the simple heralds event. The Academy of Aarnimetsa taught the
arts and sciences classes and the heraldic circles of aarnimetsa provided
the heraldic classes of the event. All together there were 16 classes in the
one day. Academy Classes included: boardweaving, clothing in different
centuries and also some simple patternmaking for beginners, shoemaking,
medieval precious and semiprecious stones, how to cook in the SCA,
documentation, and proper manners instruction. The heraldic part of the
event included classes such as:finding an SCA name, heraldic garb,
scadinavian names, heradry for beginners - how to make your own device, how
to be a local herald, runic writing and heraldry for scribes. So no-one was
left without anything to do. The problem was that one could not attend all
the lectures one would want to. A marvelous situation, don't you think!
Having too much arts and sciences! All in all people seemed to enjoy the
event, which was enough to make me, as autocrat, happy! The weather on the
site was amazing: only sunshine glimmering on the blue sea. Thus I now have
a cold. but it is a small price to pay for having been there! The next
academy provided A&S event will be held in the autumn, and I'm looking
forward to it already!
For future plans, I know there will be many wonderful handcrafts going to
the A&S competition in doublewars, some of them under my guard. There is
also the Aarnimetsa tentcamp coming in early July where I'll be organising
the A&S lectures alongside with the food and co-autocrating. Hopefully the
weather stays good all through doublewars and our tent camp!
Have a pleasant holiday and I hope to see you soon at some event or another!
In service to you, Drachenwald and Aarnimetsa,
Lady Zolderdody Alena

Blauwasser
The shire has started to pick up in terms of A&S. The addition of Master
Terafan has added a lot to our activites. We hold a weekend meeting every
other month and those always include A&S activities. In April we had a 4
hour dance practice, and even attracted people from Munich and Frankfurt.
We have also continued to work on a tapestry a month, in addition to
Terafan's brewing and woodworking.
- Terafan taught a class on Documentation at Crown Tourney and put his
notes on the web
- Terafan taught a brewing workshop at the GaWCC in March, while other
shire members researched particular foods and prepared them for the feast.
- The members have painted three more tapestries using images from the
Codex Manesse
Current A&S plans include:
- Attendance/participation in Medieval Markets throughout the summer for
ideas
Sewing Drachenwald pennons to increase the heraldic atmosphere at events
Painting a shire banner
continue to paint a tapestry each month through December
Fire March
In terms of MoAS stuff, our group has a primary interest in cooking.
Generally our meetings are potluck, trying out various medieval and
Renaissance recipes. The GaWCC feast was a joint effort and much
planning will be going on for the University feast. We've been costuming
some of
our newer members as well. Two of our wanna-be fighters have been working
on armor under Geoffrey's tutelage. One guy made his own chainmail
hauberk.
I always have embroidery projects going and am currently setting up a
piece of opus anglicanum that will eventually be a belt purse for ME (for a
change)! Geoffrey is making pattens for both of us.
Geoffrey and I will be going up to Rome in another week or so for
costuming assistance to a new couple from that area.
Greifenthal
Our Minister of Arts & Sciences, Felicitas von Ratteneck (Felicitas
Ingendahl) moved out of the territories of Greifenthal. We are currently
seeking another.
The Feast was a great success, however, since it was cooked by the Lady
Laudine de Ploërmel, who doesn't despair of writing her Feastocrat Handboke
one of these days. At present, she is very busy preparing Feast of Fools,
for which she has graciously offered her services as "Feastocrat-at-Large"
to our most noble neighbours, the Barony of Knight's Crossing.
As for further events, we shall have the Chessbattle up at Münzenberg Castle
in August, which Greifenthal is sponsoring together with the Incipient Shire
of Bärenau and the Shires of Turmstadt and Polderslot.
MeadowMarsh
a. The entire quarter has been turned over to putting together the 6
stations of our Arthurian Riddle Quest --researching heraldry, history,
costume design (I'd guess that's what you'd call what we did with the
minions), song, dance, etc. We covered as many of the arts and of the
sciences as we thought would work. The stations were designed to allow
fencing, heavy weapons fighting, archery, performing arts, creative arts,
and knowledge of medieval history. The event was designed specifically to
allow families to quest together.
b. We also worked with the Hanau Middle school in its anual Shakespearean
production - we are involved usually in costume design and martial arts -
this year providing fencing scenes in "As You Like It" and medieval dance
lessons. This is our third year participating in this endeavour.
c. There have been classes held on autocrating and feastcrating.
We always meet the third Tuesday of the month where we have an extensive
research library available. The ladies have a sewing circle in conjunction
with fighter practice which is held every Thursday.
In the next quarter we have decided:
a. to take part of the A&S library on a road show to the fighter
practice. We have many new people who have been drawn in, of course, by
the martial aspects of SCA. We'd like to entice spouses with the "other"
side of SCA by putting up an A&S display. Some of the more knowlegable of
us will be available to answer questions and perhaps encourage more
research into persona development and provide focus for researching name and
costume design.
b. Begin another SCA etiquette class for our new members
c. Practice feasting in preparation for Crown Tourney (but we have a great
time researching what to cook and how to present it)
Projects of the populace
a. Research and development of baldequin for feast hall
b. Research and development of medieval furniture
c. The ever popular constructing of armour
d. We have an active brewer
e. Taking lessons in medieval cooking from professional cooks at our local
castle
f. In service to the shire and Drachenwald, becoming Red Cross certified
to fill the need for a chirugeon.
g. Learning calligraphy
Polderslot
Mistress Hannah of Hanecnolle,
Esther Beukenhorst,
Nepveustraat 16 III, 1058 XP Amsterdam, the Netherlands, + 31 (0)20-6129432
There's not very much news since last report; we've pretty much done
what we've been planning to do. The regular groups, dancing and fencing,
the A&S night and singing are the same as usual. We had the dance workshop
for beginners,
which was a big success. Laura did almost all the teaching, and I made a
handout with dance
descriptions. Wijnand, Regina and Bertrik helped to make a CD with all the
music we
wanted. A lot of the regular dancers attended the workshop, which helped
fill out the group
and made it financially possible to rent a hall.
We also had a meeting with all the people who have promised to demonstrate
things in the
open air Museum. The Museum will open in about a year, and we are now
looking at
everything we want to be able to there, and what we meet to learn and
research in order to do
it well enough for a Museum. This means looking at period techniques and
tools. We've
made a long list of crafts we want to be able to do, like metal work, working
with leather,
woodworking, and various textile arts. Strictly speaking the demonstrations
in the Museum
are not part of the activities of the Shire, but I think all this craft
activity will carry over.
Last weekend we've had a small pattern drawing workshop, given by Sandra, one
of our
newer members who took a year of fashion school. I worked on the jacket that
I've seen in
Brueghel paintings, and Regina copied a houpellande pattern. We have
another workshop
planned for for May 14, and I expect some more people to be there. We had
that one as
well, it was small again (only Lady Anne ended up attending, plus the same
people as were at
the first one), but a lot of fun, and it seems to be inspiring to all of us
(me anyway)...
We're still planning to work on the wall hangings, but we're currently stuck
looking for a place
where we can use an overhead projector. Also we had Beltane, which was a
succes; Deirdre
(the autocrat) made a few new games, and several people prepared songs for
the bardic
circle.
Rauchenderburg
During this period we had three classes at meetings, two on couched
embroidery and one on card-weaving. Our armour shop was making armour for
Crown Tourney, which a good deal of the shire attended. They are presently
making female breastplates for the several lady fighters. Sam the Tree is
in charge of the armour shop, supervising several people at once on any
given weekend, including Timothy MacAngus and Wulfgar the Viking, who are
regular participants. Fiona Wiggins and Prussia, two of our ladies are
helping several newcomers with garb. We also held our first official event,
with people from Turmstadt and Schwarz-Loche attending. There was a period
feast, armour making and sewing of garb.
Two Seas
Unfortunately, the SCA seems to have ceased to exist up here. We have had no
activity.
Vielburgen
Our Shire has been busy with demo's lately. We worked with the Brownie
Level (Grades 1-3) Girl Scouts on their Lock-In to help them earn badges and
learn something from the past. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day
Saints (Mormons) secured Lichtenburg Castle for their demo and we had many
people show for that. Lady Nataliia and I spent an entire week
with several 2nd grade classes at Ramstein Elementary School teaching them
the various aspects of the Middle Ages, ending the instruction with a
fencing/dancing demo on Friday. Individual achievement follows.
Lady Ivana zhena Nataliia - child's gawazee (coat, pants, underdress),
ladies Italian Renaissance gown, attended all demo's and organized the
school and Brownie demo's, taught class on needle lace, Medieval Jeopardy!,
Demo's 101
m'lady Julia - ladies dress (c. 1200's), dog garb and collar
m'lady Simonis Karatas - Irish gown (wip), designed and embroidered
Byzantine tabard, embroidered 2 badges for Dragon's Needle embroidery guild,
modified 2 chemises' sleeves to be properly period, taught class on macrame
*Shanni de Barre - men's fencing tabard
Viscountess Eleonora - banners, fighting surcoat, peasant garb (wip),
helped members in the following areas: Baroness Ophelia with cotehardie
pattern, m'lady Heidi with a chemise, m'lady Simonis with Italian
Renaissance gown, types of materials appropriate for garb, research various
style of dresses
m'lady Heidi - Italian Renaissance
Baroness Ophelia Aethne O'Maoriaghain - taught class on "Uncommon Courtesy"
in the SCA
Lord Ivan Mikhailovich - taught class on basic Heraldry
Classes are booked through August with such topics as how to fight at an SCA
demo, basic Heraldry and documentation, how to make SCA weapons and more!
Ad Flumen Caeulum
Katharina v. Woinovich: I managed to finish the Norman Tunic with two linen
undertunics. Alex and I got the fur lined cape started (outer cape finished
fur lining started). I entered the A&S competition with two entries. Violet
syrup in the science group as medicine and candied orange peel in the
culinary group. Additional I tried Nucato (spiced honey nut crunch) on the
day we left for A&S as a future possible entry. I also tried marzipan
tartlets for the last Fighters-practise (GAWCC VIII). I will start to work
on two knive scabbards and an Irish dress and some woolen Tunics and linen
undertunics for the comming winter. I also want to learn more about
embroidery as Mistress Kira visited with us at the Schatzkammer Museum and
told us a lot about the embroidery there. (We also attended her class about
basic embroidery at A&S).
Alessandra: Alex will start some celtic tunics as soon as time permits. She
also helps with the fur cape
Livia: Working on a Burgundian dress but still has to figure out how to
insert the sleeves so the fall of the fabric will be "perfect" and a wood
and leather bound book for A&S which did not get completed in time. At A&S
she entered her 14. cent. metal ornamented belt.
Arnulf: He managed to be hired for the festival der Spielleute (minstrels)
in Vienna (26. May 2000). He also tries hard to finish his armor.
Group activities:
3 of us attended A&S and two (Livia and I entered in the competition) we
also attended some classes there and Master Floris asked me to write and
article about documentation which I will start soon (in English and German)
based on the outline published tin the DT.
GAWCC VIII was held in Vienna and at least Livia managed to attend the
fighting whereas Alex and I where at the Museum with Kira, Arnulf prepared
the Tavern for feast and Markus iinformed spectators about what was
happening.
Future Group activities will include some SCA events attended by different
members of the shire, and some Demos/ interaction with the public as soon as
we have worked out the shedules.

Arts and science report from Nordmark, May 2000.
The local groups under westrehus reports to me directly right now. So I don’t
need any
reports from westrehus. They will start to report as soon as they have fixed
the things that
need to be done. So that is way you don’t get any reports from westrehus. If
the local groups
wants to report to westrehus and westrehus wants to report to me then that
should work also.
But the last time I spoke with the MoAS in westrehus the report chain would
work better as it
was. I think is more important that they start up activities then collect
reports from the local
groups. I hope this works for you also.

Guild Reports:
>From the elven scribe of THLady Samilya Gyrhart of the Isles, Guild leader of
the Dragon's
Needle Embroidery Guild,
Once again it is time to report.
We have about 30 or so members of the Guild at this time.
I started an embroidery guild mailing list on the Internet so members could
write to one
another easier.
Several members have given me kingdom badges, which I passed on to their
Majesties.
A new project has been started, drawn out by THLord Hudd de Peth, where the
guild will
embroider panels from the Codex Manesse depicting the kings' and queens' arms
of
Drachenwald.
Still no clue when we'll get a web page set up.
At least two members of the guild sent items to Kingdom Art/Sci in April.
(Hudd and I ).
That's all for this quarter.
In service and friendship to the Dream,
Samilya

Since Taking over in October we have had a dramatic rise in children and a
rise in numbers of attendees at events as well. I do not think this a
coencidence, since I have had mailings and calls thanking me for having some
thing for the children at events. It seems that since there is childrens
activities, the children want to go to events, removing the burden of
finding baby sitters or relying on relatives to watch the children. This in
turn has allowed parents to attend more events than they have in the past.
Or that is what I get from some of them at least...
We have grown from 4 registered children in October to over 33 at this
present time. Ages vary from 3 years old up to 15 years of age. We presently
have approximantly 6 Teachers registered and most of these do not even have
children of their own. Further all of the Teachers are presently locaced in
the Kinght's Crossing, Veiburgen, Turmstadt, and Schwarz-Loch areas.
There still seems to be some lingering doubts as to whether the Children's
Guild will continue or just fizzle out as it has done in the past few years.
We also have only two Assistant Guild Leaders. One in Germany and the Other
in Belgium. I have spoken to their majesties about these points and wqill in
all likelyhood have a short discussion with them again at the A&S event
soon.
There has been childrens activities held at almost every event since October
of last year in the Germany, Netherlands, a few in the South Walse areas. I
have gotten little response from the other areas of our Kingdom, but, hope
that in time this will change when people see we are here to stay for the
long term...

The herbal group is sprouting, appropriately, I have received a letter from
some people in Aarnimetsä, who are interested in various forms of herbs -
growing, dyeing, cooking. I hope that they can become a local group, since
it seems we need several people in the same area to keep an interest up.

First, there hasn't been that much activity. My wagon crashed, so I haven't
been to many events lately, I still have no site for Bard's Night IV (I keep
loosing contact with Duncan of Pont Alarc), nor have I any more of the old
guild paperwork than I had six months ago. But at least I'm still there ;).
It is the usual Drachenwald trouble: People are too far away from each
other. Lots of people are very motivated and want to make things work, but
if they manage to meet once a year it's above average :(.
I really liked that idea on the DW-L to make one of the larger Drachenwald
events a 'main' event where people are most likely to go.

Recent changes:
Arnulf der Zeilner made Journeyman at St.Mathieu's Day.
Activities:
There is a lot of making music in Turmstadt, but that's not quite under the
Aegis of the Guild (except that members partake), so it does not belong
here.
Prospective Members:
I recently got an e-mail from a lady in Israel. (Cairistiona nic
Bhraonnaguinn, mka Christina van Tets, cjvt@hotmail.com) who hopes that
I/the guild can help her feel/be less isolated. Unfortunately I have no idea
how to do that.
Web Page:
Haven't updated it in a while. Arnulf is working on a german translation.
(Now, ain't *that* strange? You ought to think that, since I wrote it and
I'm german, I should be able to do the translation myself, but I just
cannot...)
Next thing I'm going to add is 'Judging Bardic' - the same paper I sent you
for the Kingdom A&S.
