Kingdom MoAS Report
Thus begins the 1st Quarter report from the offices of the Arts and Sciences

Next month we will be having our Arts and Sciences Championships in Uppsala, Sweden to take place on April 20th-22. Since there has always been classes during the KA&S competition, A formalized "mini-university" is to take place so more of a class structure will take place during the day for the general populace during the competition. A Scriptorium will also be running in conjunction with the classes so there is more for the populace to do. A Laurel-level competition is also going to be held simultaneity with the regular Kingdom Competition. The Laurel Level competition will be opened to all who wish to enter, (Laurel and Non-Laurel alike)

Unfortunately a lot of the general populace is intimidated to enter a competition that a Laurel has entered, (thus not entering any competition ) and the Laurels do not enter competitions because of the stigma attached. So, this competition had been made/opened up for the Laurels to compete in as well as those who felt they were ready to go against our best. This not only getting more people to enter the competitions, but also for all to see what the Laurels can produce, and "why they were made Laurels" Everyone benefits. :-)

At Coronation in January a special auction took place for the profits to go towards a "A&S Special Edition ". Almost $1600 was raised to aid this project, (as well as the rest to stay within the office for the next years KMoAS.) As I would personally like to see a special edition being published at least once during the KMoAS's tenure. The Incipient Shire of Schwarz-Loch graciously donated $250 from their coffers, which I am extremely grateful for. I have set a deadline of March 15th for the articles to be sent to me, so I can finish up, get them to the printers and *hopefully* have them ready to take to Sweden for KA&S. (Saving on postage) Obviously it will depend on how many articles are submitted and receiving the labels from the Kingdom Chronicler on time..

The Culinary Interest group has a new leader, Lady Stella Seraphina von Leuchtenberg, I have no doubt that she will breath life back into the group. A re-vamping of the armoring guild is also taking place and I look forward to seeing a new charter up soon. The Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild is still being headed up by THL Samilya Gryhart who is in the process of moving to the Mannheim area in Germany. The Children's Guild continues to grow and thrive under the watchful eye of Baron Galwin. The Minstrel's Guild is being lead by Lady Ingeborg Thorulfsdottir and due to her persistence and dedication Bards Night IV will be hosted by the Incipient Shire of Mynyndd Gwyn (Wales) on May 11-13. The Principality of Nordmark is also reporting activity within their guilds, which is wonderful to see the knowledge being spread throughout our fair lands.

The Arts and Sciences Criteria Pages have been posted to the A&S web site for all to view, these Criteria pages will ease some of the hardship of judging for both the judge and the competitor as well. It will take some time for the Criteria pages to be accepted throughout Kingdom as the standards to judge by, as realistically speaking, not all competitions have a huge amount of items to be judged, and of course have room to play with for "themed competitions" My hope is that in time they will be the standards for all competitions to fall within, so no matter where you go within Kingdom, you know how your item will be judged, and know what to expect.

Aarnimetsä

(Finland)

Yes, here it is, and NOTE!: in time. Unfortunately it will be a little short. this time, I don't know why. But almost all the cantons reported. I consider it a start. Also, I'm including a list of the contact details of the MoASes in the cantons, and the few villages I have details for. Unfortunately I have not been able to contact all the panache holders of Aarnimetsä yet, but I will get on the matter as soon as possible.

And yet the final business before the actual report: I will be handing in my office to my successor in the Baronial investiture in September (date has not yet been settled), and thus am setting oput the job for grabs. I already have some people interested on the job (thank heavens there's still crazy people in the world!) and will probably soon introduce them to you. Not necessarily on my next report, but as soon as the decicion is made.

Without further adieu, here it is:

The Quarterly Report for the Barony of Aarnimetsä from November 15th, 2000 to February 15th, 2001

Hukka, canton

They have goten their act together and settled down continuous dates fro meetings. every other tuesday it's craft time, and wednesdays there the open library evening for every scholar at Mistress Jaella's. Cooking gatherings are being planned also. Earlier this winter they held a small games event with plenty of arts and sciences alongside with the gaming. They have also planned to bring forth more of the scientific part, and holdong classes in Mediaval studying.

Humalasalo, canton

No report. (I'm working on it, honestly!)

Kaarnemaa, canton

(My worries were for nothing. I received a report (three pages long). Apparently the MoAS in Kaarnemaa has just simply been too busy finishing her masters that she forgot reporting. Understandably. She is also looking for a new MoAS to take over, since she has held the office for more than two, perhaps even three, years. A well deserved vacation, if you ask me.) They have held several demos trying hard to lure new members in, but unfortunately the weather was not on their side. but they collected some 12 new members which is worth the effort in a small place like Aarnimetsä. They are still continuing dancing and crafts every week, but also cooking (the food they've made sounds too good to be true!), and study circles, with lectures on Middle Ages over all. On top of this all, they've practiced some archery, music, and calligraphy and illumination. (what can I say? I forgive for missing one report. I can see why they've been busy ;>)

Poukka, canton

(After some serious kicking i've finally located the Poukka MoAS, so we can expect reports in time and every quarter) They ahd an event in December with many a merrymaking, and lots of singing and music. They have even gathered up a group that performs outside SCA, that is; in the Mundania. They are planning a demo-tape for their ensemble. For the spring they're planning, dancing, singing, cooking, handcrafts, and everything else they can think of and has a chance to do. Overall they seem to be keeping happily busy.

Unikankare, canton

They're still continuing their weekly meetings: dance on Mondays, crafts on Tuesdays, music and singing on wednesdays. They have also kept busy making armour, and dancing at the local casttle every third Sunday.

Miehonlinna, incipient canton

They're busy planning the big event coming this spring. They've also managed to hold a armouring course, with quite some people participating in the action.

Korpi, village

They keep continuing the normal dance practices and fighting practices and are planning to start craft meetings and cooking as soon as they can locate a place for it.

Salpakallio, village

Nothing much has been going on, just some personal study on clothing by the local MoAS, who has also been consulting the new members all around the area on their costuming. A meeting is being planned in the near future...

Savilahti, village

Thye've been doing dancing and crafts and cooking. Thye have found a site to hold meeting in, so perhaps their circles are starting up more efficiently...

Aarnimetsä, barony

That pretty much covers it. We have had a few A&S competitions (I'm getting pretty good at organizing them) with amazing results. Especially the metal and woodwork I've seen in these competitions had been breathtaking. Mostly people have been on Christmas holiday or just down by the dark. An A&S event is being planned by the Order of the Silver Knot to be conected to the Aarnemetsä tent camp. Now it's just the oncoming Crown Tourney that's keeping me busy.

Isles

Following are the reports I have received for this quarter. As you can tell from the lack of reports, the Isles are in a downward decline in the area of Arts and Science reports. I have written a letter addressing monthly reporting last quarter but with the response I received, I don't think it will work. I prefer monthly reports myself, but I can't report what I don't get. Of course Ireland is always up to something but I have not received their report as of yet. It tends to run about half a month late for some reason.

Isles regional A & S is up and coming but due to the fact the my other half will be leaving soon and spending a great deal of time in the desert for the next bit or so, I will not be able to attend the event. Other than the reports that follows, that's about it for us in the Isles. Winter months always seen to be slow so I can only hope that the A & S will pick up in theSpring.

In Service,

HL Marguerite Dinard

Pont Alarc:

mark.surber@tesco.net

Currently there is nothing at all to report from this shire, members are currently out of country or unavailable for meetings for last few months. The only significant item from previous months as part of the quarter has been the help we have given the RAF Alconbury High School in their adaptation of Romeo and Juliet play with costume creation and fight scene choreography

4, 5, 6, and 7) see below

Blauwasser

The shire of Blauwasser had two members attend University in November with one member teaching 3 classes. December had very little activity while January saw members starting to sew garb in preparation for the upcoming season.

Drachensheim

We are still having weekly A&S meetings. Hans and Alvilda are busy doing leatherwork most of the time. Micheal always has something brewing in his basement.

Hans the Peasant- 3 leather jaks completed, and one more in the works. Alvilda in fogr- 1 leather pouch, 1 tunic, & 1 bodice completed, 1 leather jak and 1 leather pouch in progress. The wine she had been making finished fermenting. When racked we tried it. Hopefully a year of aging will do it some good. Micheal of Kennsdale- started a new batch of mead.

Isengau

We are still having our usual bi-weekly A&S meetings. The on-going projects are sewing, embroidery, shoes and scroll making. Duncan and Marcellina did the calligraphy and illumination for a beautiful scroll for the winner of St. Matthieu's Tourney. This week we will be gathering with some people who do Viking recreation. We will exchange information and the Viking ladies will teach us tablet weaving.

The Barony of Knights Crossing

KC is kicking alright! In January, we started an aggressive A&S program to boost our collective knowledge. Classes that were taught in January were Basics of the SCA (Lord Gene) and Pattern-making for garb (Lady Karena).

Upcoming classes are: 12 Feb--Armory-heraldic design (Lord Toenis), 26

Feb--SCA Filksongs (Lord Gorlan), 12 Mar--Basic Drumming (Elizabeth), 19

Mar--Herbal Remedies (Lady Isabeau), 26 Mar--Court Heraldry (THL Janos), 23

Apr--Hats (Lady Karena), 30 Apr--12th Cent. Visigothic Calligraphy (THL Janos)

Report - Winter

Activities in the group

  • Armour workshop special weekend with instructors from US;
  • Developing garb and personas to go with and vice versa
  • Ladies are still having sewing circles at fighter practices
  • Dance workshops
  • Meetings

We have regularly scheduled A & S meetings in my home where I have an extensive library of sources of medieval history, costume design, and fabrics etc. We pick a specific topic for the general A&S meeting lately we've been working on persona development and hats/shoes.

Coming projects - We will continue to focus on hats and shoes. We're planning our own intrashire A&S exhibition/documentation workshop April 21. Each member of the shire will bring a finished project or a work in progress. A documentation workshop will follow with mini-classespresented by shire members with special expertise. We have a potluck feast and revel to round out the day.

Individual Projects

  • We always have fighters working on armour
  • Shoe and hat making is in the works at the moment

A & S recognition

Will have more to report here after our exhibition next month.

Rauchenderberg

We are still here, and are busy preparing for Feast of Fools. We are also well underway in preparation for Wench Wars I. The meetings have been held on Tuesdays as always. The place is still at the American Clubhouse in Schweinfurt. No irregular meetings had been called.

I have arranged for several A&S classes in up coming quarter. they include "medieval country line dancing" & "naughty undies through the ages", there are also serious classes on tricks of the trade to detail one's garb, advanced chain mail, leather work, blunts for arrows, and research and development of characters. I'm still working on a free night at the library.

As for awards: through my own research I have found that Roxanne/Cpt Molly & Sam/Sam the Tree are the ones who started this shire. ALL differences aside they BOTH have put forth quite a bit of effort into getting Rauchenderburg up and running. Also in the time that Cindy/Fiona has been seneschal, she has coordinated many trips, sewn for half the shire, and performed many good deeds that are too numerous to mention. I feel that these people should be recognized for the WORK they have done.

Schwarz Loch

The Stronghold of Schwarzloch has been regularly holding A&S meetings on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. We have been Alternating between a Class / Crafts Night one month and a Social / Movie night the following month.

This has worked out very well as it allows those who have not finished the previous months project or who still needs help to get both the next month while the others are watching garb or Period style movies and entertaining the children.

Our present Project for this month's A&S is Period Shoes. Followed by an excursion to our Leather provider so our growing populace can make same said items.

We have an average turn out of 1/2 to 3/4ths of our populace attending these

gatherings and classes at any time.

Due to this we are presently working on relocating the meetings to a larger place on the Katterbach Base.

Shire of Turmstadt

Turmstadt has been busy with regular classes about one per month. Two potttery workshops were held, one in December and one in January.

Personal projects of populace: Lord Aethstan of Wortham is working on a roman tent, Ulrike von Turmstadt is working on a viking tent & chair. People who are willing to share their knowledge are Lady Solveig, Lord Aethstan, Lady Theodora, Oisin McMurragh, Ulrike von Turmstadt, and probably more.

Email : neil@zig.co.za

Time period covered by the report : Last Quarter

Nothing special on the Arts and Science field has happened ie no A&S-themed

events or competitions

List of regular and irregular meetings:

  • We do have regular meetings.
  • Singing and Instrumental groups meet every week
  • Armouring and Dancing meets once a month

We also have a monthly A&S evening. The first one of the year was a general bring-ye-owne-craft-project, as well as a social event to decide on what projects and evening themes to follow in the year. Some things that have come up.we will attempt, throughout the year, to produce craft items that, at year's end, will go to a craft market stall at the local market, proceeds to go to funding either the Shire newsletter or the Pavilion Fund. We (at the suggestion of the Exchequer) have instituted the Shire Treasure Chest. This started with a pair of (OOP) boots that was donated to the Shire - in order to get it out of the chest, two items had to be "ransomed" for it.
