Burg Ludwigstein is a 15th century castle overlooking the river Werra and surrounded by beautiful woodland. It is situated southwest of the town of Witzenhausen (Nordhessen) and can easily be reached by car or train and bus. Once the residence of the Hessian Government, the castle is now a youth-hostel and activity centre.

  • 143 beds are available in rooms for from two to eight people.
  • Large assembly hall and large dining hall with historic fireplace.

Site Facilities

The castle is at the top of a hill, accessed by a short road, which can be driven. There is parking available at the castle itself. Inside the castle, most outdoor areas are cobbled.  The camping ground, which will also be used for the list field, is a grass meadow.

Indoor Accommodation

There are up to 143 beds available, with room sizes ranging from two to eight beds. Most rooms have a basin in the room.   The rooms are in the central part of the castle and spread over three floors.  Each floor has showers and toilets with separate facilities for men and women. No bedding is provided, but sheets can be rented from the site for a small fee.

Handicapped Accommodation

There is one two-bed room on the ground floor for wheel-chair users, with an adjacent toilet. Users of this room are permitted to park their vehicles directly outside. The room provides easy access to the main facilities...

Camping Facilities

The camping ground is a grass meadow a very short walk from the castle.  There is direct vehicle access to the camp ground.

Toilets and hot shower facilities for campers are provided in the Enno Naten building on the camp ground.  This will also have a camping kitchen, firepit and fridge. Further details will be provided when the building is completed at the end of 2012.  Campers have access to the swimming hall in the castle, which also has additional showers.

Fires must be off the ground.  There are fire-pits available for bigger camp fires.  Wood is available for purchase, but cannot be provided by the event for free.

There will be a small number of non-SCA campers on site.

Swimming Pool

There is a 15m x 8m heated pool available in the castle, with depth ranging from 1m to 1.4m.  Swimsuits are required.  There is no lifeguard, so swimming is at your own risk and children may not swim unless accompanied by an adult.


A sauna, big enough for 8 people, is available for extra charge. As well as the sauna, there is a relaxation room and immersion pool.  Charges are 45€ for first 2 hours and 15€ per hour thereafter. If you wish to use the sauna facilities, please so indicate when reserving.

Local Facilities

The castle store sells snacks and drinks from 07:30 to 20:00.

Nearest grocery stores are in Witzenhausen (8km) and Bad-Sooden-Allendorf (11km), where you will also  find ATMs.

The nearest pharmacy and hospital are also in Witzhausen.

About the Castle

werrameissner armsBurg Ludwigstein is the castle shown on the arms of the Werra-Meißner community.  It belongs to the nearby City of Witzenhausen, which is in the middle of the biggest growing area for cherries.

The Castle is in the nature park, Meißner–Kaufunger Wald.  This area is famous for being where the Brothers Grimm collected most of their fairy-tales.

The history of the Castle starts within the late Gothic. From 1445-1664 it was the residence for the Hessian government.  Now it is used as a Youth Hostel
